South Carolina family hopes to reopen case against boy executed in 1944 when he was 14

The family of a 14-year-old boy are petitioning a South Carolina court to reopen his case — almost 70 years after his execution.

A hearing in Sumter court began Tuesday to determine whether George Stinney, who was black, received a fair trial in 1944 when he was found guilty of killing two white girls with a railroad spike.

He was executed in the electric chair three months after the verdict — making him the youngest person put to death in the U.S. in the last 100 years. Newspapers from the time reported that straps on the electric chair didn’t fit around Stinney’s 95-pound body and that an electrode was too big for his leg.
