Studio A: Killer Mike x Cuz Lightyear (Part 1)
Cuz Lightyear is already kind of a big deal. Formerly known as SL Jones, Cuz built a considerable following as a member of Killer Mike’s Grind Time Rap Gang, the result of Mike being struck by Lightyear’s maturity as an artist at an early stage. He ran into trouble, but fortunately a prosecutor that was—as Killer Mike puts it—“not an asshole” gave Lightyear another chance at his career, and he isn’t wasting his shot.
In a sitdown with Mike before the release of his Mass Appeal Records debut ‘WHAT UP CUZ,’ Lightyear recaps what’s been a life-changing journey both mentally and artistically. Mike, who’s witnessed much of Cuz’s ascent from behind the scenes, provided accompanying commentary that pointed to Lightyear being, well, light years ahead of his time, even as SL Jones.
“This motherfucker sang, he rapped, he was smooth as Bone Thugs-N-Harmony,” said Killer Mike. “He was precise on bars, it was fabulous. Then you get to Cuz—people don’t realize, it’s still street rap—but your shit got even slicker. Cuz went out on a Run the Jewels tour last year and had fucking 3,000 to 5,000 people screaming, ‘What up cuz!’”
Lightyear’s ‘WHAT UP CUZ’ EP features contributions from Mike, Metro Boomin and more.
