By Amber B
Last summer I got the chance to talk with talented upcoming urban pop singer and songwriter Yhai Portier. Fast forward a year later and Yhai is making major moves. She will be releasing her catchy pop single “BadGirl” this summer with her alto tones. While we await Yhai has been busy reading cartoon scripts, hitting the dance studio and building her brand. We recently had the chance to catch up with the pop beauty and she opened up about her single “BadGirl,” her southern cookbook “A Southern Girls Menu,” influences in the music industry, and much more.
GMBU: At what age did you start entertaining?
Yhai Portier: I started singing and entertaining at the age of 3.
GMBU: We see you have a musical background from your dad, How did your parents influence your talents?
Yhai Portier: Really it was both my parents and my stepfather, they all played a role. My dad had his own singing group called “The Sensational 5”,they traveled and performed but a lot of his performances he did before I born so I feel he spiritually passed it down to me. My mom wrote songs and could also sing. She would help me diligently with my songwriting. She and my step-dad also helped me shoot my 1st video, contacted labels, the whole nine yards. All my sisters sing so our house was always filled with music.
GMBU: How and when did you decide pop music would be your musical route?
Yhai Portier: I chose Pop at the age of 5,I was completely overtaken by popular culture,I breathed it!
GMBU: Who are your musical inspirations and role models?
Yhai Portier: Totally influenced by Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney, Tina,
GMBU: Are you still working with Jazz from R&B group “Dru Hill”?
Yhai Portier: Yes I am,that is my musical mentor and brother. Both of our schedules are crazy. He is currently in Australia touring with the group and I’m preparing for the release of the single but we’ve talked about our past duet and possibly doing a new one. We may release the ballad we did,we’ll see, stay tuned.
GMBU: Tell us about your upcoming single “BadGirl’?
Yhai Portier: “BadGirl” is Urban Goth Pop,it’s where the streets meet horror….I’m actually into Horror,it’s my favorite type of film so I decided to bring some imagination to the single “BadGirl” and the video. “BadGirl” sounds like a one night stand but actually she’s a night creature,a vamp.
GMBU: Define “BadGirl”?, Do you consider yourself a “Bad Girl”?
Yhai Portier: A “BadGirl” is a fearless creature, someone undefined. She’s not just naughty or rebellious, those girls are bad but a Real Bad Girl takes the night and makes it day,so she builds her life off of the stones thrown at her.
GMBU: I know the single is dropping this summer, can we expect the visual to drop this summer also?
Yhai Portier: The video will be coming out with the single. I am so excited. Shot by Houston’s own Ty Williams with “Filmin Fa Funn Productions.”
GMBU: How does your music relate to your fans?
Yhai Portier: My music is something new, something different, something fresh,my fans are the ones that are looking for a new sound on the radio,I’m Her.
GMBU: We know you are multi-talented, tell us about your self published cookbook “A Southern Girls Menu” and where can we find it?
Yhai Portier: My cookbook “A Southern Girls Menu” is a collective of over 50 Southern dishes that most traditional Southern families enjoy, blended in with summertime juices and desserts, also it has non traditional favorites like Italian dishes and all natural food. It can be found here on Amazon.
GMBU: How was it doing a cartoon script for “The Yard”?
Yhai Portier: OMG,it was so much fun! I actually grew up in Clarksdale,Ms and in a impoverished area,my hood had all kinds of characters. I pulled from my experiences and created the characters and began writing and my best friend, Actress/Writer “Vi Brown” helped me develop their personalities! We laughed the entire time, she didn’t know my childhood was so comical!
GMBU: When you’re not in the studio what do you like to do for fun?
yhai portier: My fav pastime is movie watching and arcade games, video games. I’m competitive in the games tho… a lil too much
GMBU: Will there be any upcoming EP’s or Albums?
Yhai Portier: Yes,my album will be titled “Generation Y” after the fresh new sound I plan to bring to the industry, so I figured I’d create the title after my fans since this is a new generation of music lovers. It’s slated for the end of this year!
