A Discussion On Bail Reform & Breaking Down The Pedro Hernandez Case

Justice League NYC’s Carmen Perez, Forward USA’s Rena Karefa-Johnson, and Pedro Hernandez’s mother Jessica Perez and her younger son Luis Hernandez.

Pedro Hernandez was held behind bars after being accused by NYPD officers in the South Bronx of taking a part of a shooting outside a grocery store during a fight. He told officers he did not see the shooting, but was held behind bars on $250,000 bail. Officer David Tyrell has been accused of allegedly asking Jessica for a date in which she turned down. He has since been accused of “using threats to compel at least two young men from the same neighborhood to sign false affidavits against Mr. Hernandez” according to New York Times.

Hip Hop Has Heart Foundation presented Carmen Perez with $10,000 to help with the fight of bail reform in New York City and around the United States.

Mr. Hernandez was accused of taking part in a September 2015 shooting outside a grocery store on 169th Street during a fight between rival street crews. A gun was fired during the confrontation. A bullet ricocheted off the sidewalk and hit a 15-year-old boy, Shaun Nardoni, in the ankle. He told investigators he did not see who shot him.

. The teenager, Pedro Hernandez, had refused a plea deal, then sued the city, alleging that police detectives in the 42nd Precinct framed him.

The district attorney, Darcel D. Clark, said in a statement that her office was investigating the actions of the police and prosecutors who obtained the indictment against Mr. Hernandez; she promised to “go wherever the evidence leads.”
