A Tribe Called Quest
By Jack Barnes
RIP Phife Dawg. We at Audible Treats can’t imagine how different our lives would be without A Tribe Called Quest being the soundtrack to so many poignant moments of our lives. Thank you for the memories. Our hearts go out to you and your family. Enjoy this audio stream below after the jump.
25 years ago, legendary rap group A Tribe Called Quest released their classic debut People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, seamlessly merging Hip-Hop with Jazz influences and paving the way for conscious rap. “Can I Kick It?” with its loping, Lou Reed-sampling bassline and universally known call and response chorus, is arguably the album’s most iconic track. Though the Tribe recently stopped touring, the members of the group live on in the public eye, with Q-Tip recently becoming the first-ever Artistic Director for Hip-Hop Culture at the Kennedy Center, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad a popular radio host on NPR. Despite the intimidating pedigree of “Can I Kick It?”, even the most ardent old-school Hip-Hop head would agree that San Francisco DJ King Most‘s new redirection does justice to the original track.
