Allegedly, Love Isn’t Cool
From Dimplez Diary
By Jack Barnes
Twitter told me that love isn’t cool. That people our age don’t know about meaningful connections, and that self-worth should be directly reflected by how many likes and retweets you get. As though if you weren’t following me on Facebook or didn’t swipe right on my existence that this wouldn’t mean anything… But that couldn’t be further from the truth.I spend a lot of time working. Oftentimes, I get to do some pretty cool things. Yet no matter what I accomplish, nothing bothers me more than coming home to an empty home… Here I am, proud of myself — I just did something amazing: defeated a deadline, secured a partnership, publicized talent…hoo-ray! But there’s no one home. There’s no one here to celebrate me.
But love isn’t cool, right? Then why is this so hard? It’s tough when you feel like you are growing but there’s no one there to see you do it. At the end of the day, the artists that we work with go home and live their lives, while the rest of us don’t have that luxury. Our lives have become work, and our Valentines become Snapchat DMs and emails… *Note: There is no greater well of loneliness than actually being alone.
However, there’s hope… Love is beyond “cool”. Love is what you love before, during, and after you’re hot sh*t. Love is stumbling across the perfect melody. Love is messing up the lyrics. Love is sitting in your car until the song ends. Love is what you see in the mirror or don’t. Love is who is there when you need someone to listen. Love is selfishness AND sacrifice. Love is selfless. Love is going it alone — or together. Love is being broke but feeling rich. Love is eating microwaved Ramen made with unfiltered water. Love isyour Netflix password. Love is HBOGo & commitment. Love is who sticks with you when the lights are off, the bills are past due, and your Instagram fame wanes. Love is faith. Love is trust. Love is not taking your phone into the bathroom with you when you shower… Love is severely underrated.
For those of us going in to the Hallmark day un-tethered, Happy Single’s Awareness Day. For everyone else, hope your Valentine’s Day sweet.
This is not a newsletter about good vibes, positive living, or random quotes of motivation. This is me learning those lessons that no one ever told us would come, and hoping you don’t make the same mistakes that I did in the process.
