Austin is about to get Wild for the Night as MTV today named Harlem rapper and cultural tastemaker A$AP Rocky host of the all-new “MTV Woodies/10 for 16,” a newly reimagined edition of MTV’s annual emerging artists festival.  Now, in its 12th year, the “Woodies” will forgo its classic award show format to showcase more music than ever, naming and celebrating ten artists poised to rise in 2016. The one-hour LIVE broadcast of “MTV Woodies/10 for 16” premieres on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV from South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas.  Additionally, for the first-time ever, “MTV Woodies/10 for 16” festival will air in its entirety on the newly launched channel MTV Live (formerly Palladia) beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET/4:00 p.m. CT/2:00 p.m. PT and live stream on woodies.mtv.com. A 90-minute expanded version of the festival will air on the MTV Live channel on Saturday, March 19 at 9:00 p.m. ET.  Performers will be announced at a later date.

And there’s no artist better suited to present fresh talent than A$AP Rocky, a man who lives on the cutting edge of hip hop, fashion, and all-around cool.” 
 
Influenced by the Southern-style swagger of UGK and the rhymes of his hometown heroes the Diplomats, A$AP Rocky gave up his work in the underground economy in Harlem and moved to Elmwood Park, New Jersey, where he started rapping. By the time he completed his GED, the self-proclaimed hood outcast was being championed by media outlets such as the Fader, Pitchfork, The New York Times, XXL, as well as rap superstar Drake, on the strength of the Internet-leaked singles “Peso” and “Trilla.” In 2011, just after he turned 22, A$AP Rocky released the Deep Purple mixtape and followed it months later with the digital release of his debut effort, the street album Live. Love. A$AP. After reportedly signing a significant deal with Polo Grounds Music/RCA Records, the album was re-released in February of 2012. Even without an official debut album, the rapper rounded out the year with a nomination for BBC Radio’s Sound of 2012 poll, performing alongside Rihanna at the “2012 MTV Video Music Awards,” playing Lana Del Rey’s husband in the singer’s “National Anthem” video, and landing a spot in a television commercial for the popular video game FIFA Soccer 13. His official debut album, Long.Live.A$AP, finally landed in 2013 and featured the single “Goldie.” 2 Chainz, Kendrick Lamar and Skrillex were among his guests, while production came from the likes of Clams Casino, Hit-Boy, Danger Mouse, and Jim Jonsin. Executive produced by Danger Mouse and A$AP Yams, the album A.L.L.A. (At. Long. Last.A$AP) followed in 2015, debuting at #1 on the Billboard charts and featuring Kanye West, Miguel, Mark Ronson, Rod Stewart, Schoolboy Q, Lil Wayne and more.  Rocky also made feature film appearances in last summer’s coming-of-age comedy DOPE and 2016’s Zoolander 2, launched a collaboration with Guess through his company AWGE, and received a Grammy nomination for his “L$D” video, co-directed by Dexter Navy.  Rocky will be joined on stage for the “MTV Woodies/10 for 16” by the inimitable A$AP Mob, including appearances by A$AP Ferg, A$AP Nast, A$AP Illz, A$AP Bari, A$AP Addie and A$AP Lou.  With all of their collective success and touring, it’s increasingly rare to have so many Mob members together, making this night in Austin, TX an even bigger celebration.
