Last night, ASCAP hosted its 9th annual “Women Behind the Music” event at Bardot in Los Angeles. This annual occasion honors women for their work in the music industry, both artistically and in executive positions. This year’s honorees included singer-songwriter KIRBY, VP of A&R at Pulse Music Group, Ashley Calhoun and Epic Records’ Senior Director of A&R Ericka Coulter. ASCAP’s Cristina Chavez hosted the evening and DJ Niena Drake provided the music for the reception.
During the Q&A, honorees each shared stories on how they began their careers in the music industry. KIRBY wrote a song every day and created videos for YouTube; after the 302nd day she was signed to Roc Nation. Ashley Calhoun moved to Los Angeles and enrolled at The Los Angeles Recording School. There, she learned audio and engineering, as well as publishing and the music business. Ericka Coulter originally went to college for fashion, but later began to gravitate towards music.
