Black ranchers in El Paso County, Colorado, were arrested earlier this week after neighbors harassed them.
Courtney and Nicole Mallery, owners of Freedom Acres Ranch, were jailed on stalking, tampering with water or utility, and theft charges. Courtney Mallery was detained with a level five felony charge. They were accused by their neighbor, Teresa Clark, but it’s unclear what led to those charges being filed.
The couple said their farm had been targeted by killing their animals, destroying their fence posts, burning their Black Lives Matter flags, spray painting racial slurs on their land, and even waving guns at them.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has responded to 170 calls and 19 complaints involving the Mallerys over the past two years.
Joining me now are Portia Prescott, President of the Rocky Mountain NAACP, and the spokesperson for the Mallerys, Dr. Vern L. Howard, Chairman of the private Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission.
