Building a Youth Orchestra in the ‘Hood’ [Photos]

Youth Orchestra

By Jack Barnes

Violinist, and YouTube Symphony (2009) Concertmaster, David France is putting his own spin on the old-conservatory model and has launched an Indiegogo campaign to build a world-class Youth Orchestra in the ‘hood. Modeled after Venezuela’s El Sistema program, Revolution of Hope has launched the Roxbury Youth Orchestra in Boston’s historically black neighborhood of Roxbury.

He believes that music can be a gateway into the American Dream for under-served youth and can be a platform for teaching 21st century workforce skills like: Teamwork, collaboration, creativity, and Grit! The campaign was launched this week and has 60 days to reach its goal of $15,000. David believes that when we take short-cuts in education we short change our youth, therefore he is giving back to the community everything he has learned from some of the world’s most famous string teachers.
