CHANCE THE RAPPER

By Jack Barnes

Hometown favorite Chance the Rapper hosted and headlined a free concert at Petrillo Music Shell in Grant Park called “Parade to the Polls.” Sponsored by his non-profit group Social Works, concertgoers were led by organizers to the nearest early voting location, the site at 15 West Washington Street after the performances ended. The event was geared toward millennium voters, who have been crucial in recent elections.Voters waited in long lines to cast their ballots Monday at early voting sites. Cook County officials said early voting numbers for 2016 smashed records set in 2008. And around 6 p.m. Chance the Rapper led a crowd of hundreds of early voters from a concert in Grant Park’s Petrillo Music Shell to the early voting super center in the Loop to cast their ballots as well.

Cook County Clerk David Orr said pre-Election Day voting – consisting of early voting, grace period voting and mail voting – reached over 438,212 ballots as of about 8 p.m. Monday. The previous record was 273,661 ballots in 2012.
