Eric Bellinger – “Treat Yourself” (feat. Wale) [Audio]

Eric Bellinger

By Jack Barnes

With a gorgeous singing voice belying boastful streetwise lyricism, Eric Bellinger effortlessly straddles the worlds of Hip-Hop and R&B. Capitalizing on the 2016 campaign season, Eric released the Eric B. and Rakim-referencing Eric B. For President: Term 1 in September 2016. Hitting stores on March 10th, Bellinger forsakes the club for island vibes on Eric B. For President: Term 2, his next EP. Borrowing sounds from bossa nova, yacht rock, reggae, and other beach-friendly genres, Eric synthesizes a breezier version of his woozy, romantic brand of R&B. Featuring appearances from Wale, Victoria Monet, Elhae, and Talya ParxEric B. For President: Term 2 is a ray of sunshine in a dark winter, and an ideal vehicle for romantic escapism. Enjoy this audio stream below after the jump.

Explains Eric Bellinger, “The vibe for Term 2 is island-y, fit for a tropical vacation. When Obama left office, he went jet-skiing on vacation. I’m taking that approach to give a sense of relaxation and chill and positive vibes in light of the new presidency. It’s a dark time, so I wanted to take the opposite approach and make something light and fun. Term 1 had the hip hop approach with the reference to Eric B and Rakim, but for this one, I wanted to go back to my RnB roots.”

A proven hitmaker and in-demand songwriter who has collaborated with Justin Bieber, Usher, Selena Gomez, and more, Eric Bellinger is your favorite rapper’s favorite singer. Last month, Bellinger released an acoustic interpretation of Eric B. For President: Term 1, stripping down the project’s songs to their bare essence and revealing a core of quality songwriting, silky vocals, and clever lyricism. Eric B. For President: Term 2 will cement Eric’s status as one of R&B’s brightest stars.

Today, VIBE premieres Treat Yourself,” an ode to rewarding hard work by spending money on a lavish lifestyle. Featuring an assist from Wale, “Treat Yourself” is an unconventional R&B banger, combining swinging bossa nova acoustic guitars with snapping percussion. “Wale is someone I’ve been working super closely with lately,” says Eric Bellinger. “When he heard the song he immediately hopped on. ‘Treat Yourself’ is easily one of my favorite joints on the project. I love all of the songs but this one is special to me because it’s the first time I’m actually being kind of braggadocious on a record. I thought it was time to let people know what time it is – ‘I deserve that whip right there/ I deserve to pull up to that big house in my name’. ”
