GirlTrek, the largest health movement and nonprofit for Black women and girls in the country, is leading a movement to put Black women at the forefront of Women’s History Month by proclaiming March 1, 2020 as Black Women’s Appreciation Day, a national call to action to #ThankBlackWomen.
“This February 29th, the last day of Black History Month, join us in flooding the internet with love letters to Black women,” said GirlTrek cofounder, T. Morgan Dixon. “This single collective action will shift the atmosphere. By the time the world catches on to what we are doing – #ThankBlackWomen – it will be March 1st, the first day of Women’s History Month. GirlTrek is asking Black women and allies around the country to #ThankBlackWomen by flooding the internet with love letters, videos and other meaningful actions and posts that highlight appreciating Black women. To launch Black Women’s Appreciation Day, musician and singer/songwriter Anhayla wrote A Love Song to Black Women.
With more than half a million active members and counting, GirlTrek, as profiled on CNN, encourages Black women to use radical self-care and walking as the first practical step to leading healthier, more fulfilled lives. GirlTrek is on a mission to inspire one million Black women to walk in the direction of their healthiest, most fulfilled lives by the end of 2020. It all starts with taking the pledge at GirlTrek.org.
“The most radical thing we can do is pursue joy when everything around us tells us to be sad. We’re moving forward; we’re walking it out,” says Dixon.
On March 1, GirlTrek will hold a virtual 2020 Trekker Awards Ceremony to be hosted by co-founders Vanessa Garrison and T. Morgan Dixon. The show will be broadcast via Facebook LIVE from the GirlTrek national headquarters in Washington, D.C. Everything starts at 6 p.m. EST.
