In coordination with Yale organizations The Afro-American Cultural Center, Yale Divinity School, Dean’s and President’s Fund, Institute of Sacred Music and the Christian Union, Lecrae addressed students at Yale University about bridging the racial divide in America on Thursday, April 28, 2016. The event, held at Battell Chapel, was free to all students.
Lecrae’s speech dissected the American narrative and the constraints within the media to truly capture history in its entirety as opposed to its far too often limited vantage point.
Battell Chapel is the largest chapel at Yale University and is one of the locations on the Connecticut Freedom Trail. It is home to an exhibition depicting the role that the Yale Divinity School faculty and students played in assisting the Amistad Africans. The exhibition is located in the chapel’s vestibule and is maintained by Yale University.
In addition to his record breaking recording career Lecrae is a powerful voice in the African-American community. As a community leader, he’s played a pivotal role guiding young people through some of the turmoil facing the nation. During the Ferguson protests, he was a calm figure urging protestors toward non-violent demonstration. He’s written several Op-Eds for Billboard Magazine ranging from his take on Black History Month to the Charleston shooting tragedy. Lecrae is a frequent contributor to media often reflecting and transcribing the frustration of young people in regard to injustice.
Lecrae is a Grammy award winning hip-hop artist whose 2014 album, Anomaly, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200, Rap, Digital, Christian, Gospel, and Independent charts. His seven studio albums and mixtapes have sold more than 1.5 million copies. Lecrae has been nominated for five Grammy Awards, including a win in 2013 for Best Gospel Album and Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song in 2015, as well as won seven Dove Awards, won a Billboard Music Award, won two Soul Train Music Awards and a BET Hip Hop Awards nomination. Lecrae resides in Atlanta, Georgia with his wife and three children.
