J.R. Donato, Wiz Khalifa & Chevy Woods
By Jack Barnes
A hypnotic head-nodder from three of Taylor Gang‘s best emcees, the visual for “The Man“ is an emphatic display of earned confidence. Directed by BCKYRD and premiered by Billboard, “The Man” sees TGOD linchpins Wiz Khalifa, J.R. Donato, and Chevy Woods revisiting their past and countings their blessings for their present situation. Chicago native J.R. Donato leads the song by detailing his come up, earning respect (and resistance) from his peers, and doing the necessary duties that come with growing a family. Chevy and Wiz provide a veteran’s perspective, bearing witness to the oft-complicated ascension to fame. Enjoy this video stream below after the jump.
Featuring smooth, introspective flows over a sunlight-drenched beat, populated with soaring guitar lines and chiming synths, “The Man” is a highlight from TGOD Vol 1. A compilation project that accompanied Taylor Gang’s signing to Atlantic Records, TGOD Vol. 1 features contributions from the crew’s entire roster and is a major showcase for the label’s young talent.
Donato explains the song’s significance to Billboard: “It’s important for black youth to feel proud about ourselves because we’re kings: it’s in our blood and our roots to be just that. Also, we’re told so much by cops, teachers, the upper class, etc, that we won’t be sh-t. So when you beat the statistics or beat the odds, show them anything is possible and this is what’s meant to be. Remain humble but let your presence be felt.”
Among the most prominently spotlighted young artists on TGOD Vol. 1, J.R. Donato dropped his Dark Knight-inspired mixtape Why So Serious? in Fall 2016. A veteran in the game at age 22, the Chicago North-Sider became a local hero in his school days, touring with Twista at 15 and eventually signing with Taylor Gang at 19. Meanwhile, label veteran and Wiz Khalifa day-one Chevy Woods is currently preparing for the release of his Taylor’d album, due in the coming months. A hard-working emcee with several mixtapes, EPs, and singles under his belt, Taylor’d is Chevy’s debut full-length album.
Ever since its founding by Wiz Khalifa, Taylor Gang Entertainment has been one of the most successful Hip-Hop labels in the business. Boasting an impressive roster of talented and popular artists, including Wiz himself, Juicy J, Ty Dolla $ign, Berner, Chevy Woods, Raven Felix, J.R. Donato, Tuki Carter, KH and Sosamann, Taylor Gang artists have earned more than 6 billion plays on YouTube and over 6 billion streams on streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music. The Taylor Gang crew continues an excellent year, inspiring intense devotion in its pack of ravenous fans, only to be furthered with the release of their stellar first tape. With one of the most active touring schedules in music, Taylor Gang have played to millions of fans across the globe, spreading their message and lifestyle as they go.
