John McCain, political maverick and war hero dies at 81

Republican Sen. John McCain (main), of Arizona, spent decades as a brave and dedicated public servant before succumbing to cancer this week at the age of 81. Born into a strong military tradition – his father and grandfather were both four-star admirals – McCain attended the United States Naval Academy and flew combat missions in Vietnam. He was shot down in October 1967 and spent more than five years in a POW camp (inset), refusing offers of release until fellow prisoners were freed, before he returned to America with extensive injuries. He has seven children, including four with second wife Cindy (top right, with two of their children) – who stood by his side as he ran for Congress and eventually for President, a bid he made twice unsuccessfully (bottom right). In a speech just nine months ago, McCain spoke of his ‘sense of honor’ to Annapolis graduates and told them: ‘May your lives be as lucky as mine’
