KCRW presents Gustavo’s Great Tortilla Tournament with Good Food’s Evan Kleiman, and the author of Taco USA, Gustavo Arellano, crowning the best flour and corn tortillas in Greater LA, on Sunday, September 16, from 3-7pm, at the LA River Center & Gardens.
Southern California loves tortillas. Everyone knows – from home cooks to loncheras, mom-and-pops to high-end spots – that tortillas are more than just vessels for tacos and burritos. But which is the best?
SoCal muckraker Arellano and Good Food’s esteemed host Kleiman have scoured Southern California for the best corn and flour tortillas. They visited supermarkets and mercados, restaurants and factories, new spots and places that have been around for generations, using the following criteria: does the tortilla reheat well? Will it quesadilla? And, most importantly, how does it taste? These questions will be answered, and the best of the best will be revealed on Sunday, September 16th.
It all started with the tournament’s Masa Madness tortilla brackets – 32 corn, 32 flour. Over the weeks, the field was narrowed to 16, then 8, and now only the final FUERTE FOUR remain. Find out once and for all: Corn, or flour? The winner takes home the Golden Tortilla—an actual, golden tortilla!
The event, sponsored by Coast Packing Company, will include:
A celebration of the late Jonathan Gold, beloved food ambassador, colleague, and an original Tortilla Tournament judge and co-host
Tortilla tastings, including from the final FUERTE FOUR
Multiple food vendors (think Vegan-Mex, quesadillas, and more)
Live demos, games, and much more for tortilla fans to enjoy!
Before you get there, taste along and go on your own journey to discover tortillas all over the Southland with the tournament’s tortilla map! Plus find out more about all the tortillas and their makers on Good Food. You’ll be ready to judge for yourself! RSVP now.
