i-D Magazine unveiled Kendrick Lamar as the latest cover star for their Winter 2017 issue, The Sounding Off Issue, a celebration of the music we love and the people who make it.
i-D lead the issue with arguably the world’s greatest living rhymer, cover star Kendrick Lamar, shot by world renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean and styled by i-D’s Fashion Director Alastair McKimm. In a thoughtful and considered interview with New York based cultural commentator Touré, Kendrick ruminates on the impact of seminal track Alright, Obama, Trump and the power of the mind.
“I’m a human being, I’m a person, I have family, I have my own personal problems. But I have to give to the world. That’s my responsibility. It’s not just a job or entertainment for me; this is what I have to offer to the world.” – Kendrick Lamar
“The key differences [between Obama and Trump] are morals, dignity, principles, common sense. How can you follow someone who doesn’t know how to approach someone or speak to them kindly and with compassion and sensitivity.” – Kendrick Lamar
From politics to mental health, identity to female autonomy, musicians today are more vocal than ever before in discussing the vital issues of our times. Singers, songwriters, rhymers, producers, musicians, fans and thinkers are using their platforms and voices to promote positive change.
The Sounding Off Issue features a provocative and powerful collection of words and images that travels the globe from Glasgow to Ghana, Ireland to Iran and Chicago to China, unearthing the most important people in music right here, right now. Read Kendrick’s interview exclusively on i-D:
