Kenneth Turan’s DVD Pick of the Week: Classics From the 1960s

This week I want to salute Criterion Collection’s release of a pair of 1960s films about individuals at society’s margins persisting in dreaming the American Dream.
From 1961 is “A Raisin In The Sun,” taken from the Lorraine Hansberry play and starring Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee as a married couple with different ideas about how to lift their family into the middle class.
Released in 1969, “Midnight Cowboy” stars Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight as outsiders trying to survive the always mean streets of Manhattan. – Kenneth Turan
