Kenya released two EPs prior to My Own Skin: the self-penned Starting Over in 2010 and a project of covering favorite R&B songs Jazz Made Rhythm in 2012 – via her own KenyaMJMusic Productions company and building fan bases both here and abroad. This November, Expansion Records will release Kenya’s fourth project Skin Deep: The Collection which is an album of reworks and remixes produced by a variety of deep soulful house and progressive jazz producers from around the world including Mark de Clive Lowe, Tom Glide, Edgewood Agents (Khari Simmons, Daz I Kue & Julius Speed), Sean McCabe and Opolopo. The project consists of select songs from My Own Skin that are reworked/remixed which provides an eclectic blend of upbeat and progressive music that is sure to receive continued positive attention internationally.
Kenya has opened shows for three-time Grammy Award winning recording artist Lalah Hathaway, Rachelle Ferrell, Raul Midon, and Stokley Williams of Mint Condition. She has toured both the UK, Amsterdam, and the U.S. playing at such venues as House of Blues in Chicago, Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., Essence Festival in New Orleans, The Fairmont in Los Angeles and Jazz Café in London, UK to name a few. This fall, Kenya is scheduled to do another UK tour as well as perform on the noteworthy Captial Jazz SuperCruise Oct.23-30, 2016 as a featured artist in the independent soul artist lounge hosted by recording artist Eric Roberson.
In addition to performing and songwriting, Kenya’s music production company has established an artist development service, Creating Crimson, for artists seeking development and guidance in navigating creative goals both professionally and personally. Kenya launched an extremely successful Social Media Tour titled “Creating Crimson Conversations” and collaborated with established independent artists in an effort to help more developing artists using social media such as Twitter chats, Periscope discussions and a YouTube Live event. Kenya’s goal is to assist and encourage and empower other new artists to pursue their passion of music in an informed and well equipped manner.
