Lando Chill Announces New Album Black Ego

By Jack Barnes

LA-based artist Lando Chill makes music which is technically classified as hip-hop, but isn’t tethered to a single genre; encompassing elements of funk, gospel, jazz, indie rock, psychadelic, and folk. Born in Chicago, IL as Lance Washington, today he announces his new album Black Ego set for release on October 12th via Mello Music Group. In anticipation, he also shares new single Peso with HipHopDX – featuring Detroit-based rapper / producer Quelle Chris and LA-based hip-hop / soul artist ReyEnjoy this audio stream below after the jump and please share this with friends.

About the new track, Lance comments: “Lasso & I set out to create a soundscape that could be the canvas for both our southwest border influence & midwest origins, nestled between the experience of living as a person of color in a police state & the caution one must inherit in order to feel safe in a country that has yet to fully accept nor understand equality. The hood is as much the ‘frontline’ as the border & reservations, as they all have been militarized against & oppressed by our government; through legislation, perception, & abhorrent action. Quelle Chris & Rey from Ojalá Systems round out the narrative; creating a kaleidoscope of wisdom & wariness that precedes what it means to be a person of color battered by the wage gap within the police state in which we reside.”

After moving from Chicago to Tucson, AZ for college, Lando released his 2016 debut full-length For Mark, Your Son – an intense self-examination inspired by the loss of the rapper’s father, who died of a heart attack when Washington was four years old which garnered acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, Respect Magazine, and more. In 2017, the genre-bending musician teamed up with multi-instrumentalist and producer The Lasso resulting in a singular sound only possible through a true symbiosis of vocalist and producer. The result was Lando’s most recent album The Boy Who Spoke To The Wind, which was named #26 on Bandcamp Daily’s 100 Best Albums of the Year and contained a more abstract, experimental sound than his prior releases.

Once again, the duo have teamed up and taken a leap forward together with the upcoming LP – a collection of songs that’s equal parts west coast funk and desert trip-hop, threaded together by Lando’s bold vision. Be sure to stay tuned for more from Lando Chill, as Black Ego promises to be his most ambitious work to date.
