Lezley McSpadden

By Jack Barnes

Lezley McSpadden, the mother of Michael Brown, the African American teenager killed by a police officer in Ferguson, MO in 2014, stopped by the SiriusXM studios to discussTELL THE TRUTH AND SHAME THE DEVIL, her powerful new memoir. Enjoy this audio stream below after the jump.

During the one-hour interview at SiriusXM, hosted by publisher Judith Regan, Lezley McSpadden shared deeply personal stories of her life and her experiences mothering Michael Brown.

On Beyonce and her cameo in “Lemonade:

“I felt special.  She had done some nice things for my son’s foundation so, at that point whatever you want me to do, I’ll do it…She’s a sweet person… really down to earth.  She treated us well, made sure we were comfortable.  I tried to  hold it together but, any time I’m talking about my son or looking at a picture I just think that he’s gone.  I appreciate her for being bold enough to confront things and be sensitive at the same time.

Describing the day her son Michael Brown was fatally shot:

“I jumped out of the car and felt like I was running for miles.  I saw the tape and one officer.  I looked around and saw the sheet…I felt like I died.”

On a solution for black mothers:

“I don’t want them [kids] to be scared.  I want them to be aware.  We want the police to show the difference between good policing and bad policing…

I hope the person that did this to my son thinks that about that as well ‘cause he has kids.  They have to grow up and they’re gonna read about this and hear about this.  And they may go back and ask their father again ‘why did you do that dad?’…  “he was a bad guy.’ ‘But you encountered him for 45 seconds…what could you know about him in 45 seconds.’”

Lezley McSpadden is the mother of Michael Brown, and founder of The Michael O. D. Brown We Love Our Sons & Daughters Foundation, which advocates for justice, improving health, advancing education, and strengthening families. McSpadden also founded its signature program, Rainbow of Mothers, which was established to support mothers who have suffered the devastating loss of a child.

The full interview will air on Saturday, May 21st at 1:00 pm on SiriusXM Stars channel 109.
