Marijuana won BIG! An unprecedented nine states considered liberalizing cannabis laws, and here’s how it broke down: California, Massachusetts and Nevada saw their ballot measures pass on Tuesday. A slim majority of voters in Arizona defeated Prop 205, and talk about a nail-biter, Maine officially made the call Thursday afternoon. In addition, four states voted to legalize marijuana for medical use —Arkansas, Montana, Florida and North Dakota.
BUT DON’T LIGHT UP JUST YET
Even though the votes went through, that doesn’t necessarily mean recreational weed is legal in those states right at this second. Each of the states with newly-approved legalization have their own set of specific rules about consumption, possession, growth and selling.
THE QUESTION IS, WILL PRESIDENT TRUMP ALLOW IT?
Trump has said he favors states’ rights and indicated he would not dismantle existing marijuana regulations, but some of his past statements and political allies have raised concerns in the industry. The federal government cannot force states to reintroduce marijuana prohibition, and it has only limited power over what it can tell a state its marijuana policies should be.
GOING GREEN: HALF WAY THERE!
This now means that over half – 33 total states – have gone green and legalized marijuana. Nearly 60 million Americans live in states that have abolished marijuana prohibitions, and another 24 million Americans find themselves in states with newly legal medical marijuana use. Now go celebrate!
