Figures suggest that the gap between the rich and poor in the UK could be increasing. It’s not easy to pinpoint the cause, and depending on your position on the political spectrum, you could identify a number of reasons for this phenomenon. Whichever philosophy you subscribe to, the fact is that it’s not much fun to try and live low-budget in the UK in 2019.
There are, however, ways you can make sure you’re staying financially solvent even as you search for a job. If you’re out of work right now, don’t despair – all is not lost. From loans to extra sources of income to volunteering, there’s plenty of stuff you can do to help yourself survive in a low-budget situation. Here are our tips on how to survive without much money in 2019.
Consider taking out a loan
It might initially sound counter-intuitive, but you could actually help yourself by taking out a loan. There are companies out there who provide special loans for people on benefits with longer and much more lenient repayment terms. If you’re really hurting for cash and you need a pick-me-up, perhaps until you begin a new job or receive an expected benefits payment, then companies like the above Fair Finance can be the perfect way to achieve this. If you make prompt repayments, your credit rating will actually improve, and you might find yourself able to get more and better loans in the future.
Set a strict budget
If you’re going to live frugally, you need to make sure you’re creating and sticking to a harsh and strict budget. Making a budget for yourself isn’t easy, but it is definitely a skill you can learn and implement in your daily life. By setting a strict budget, you’re being realistic about how much money is available to you and how much you’ll have to spare after the month is over. This applies to you whether you’re living on benefits, working a low-income job, or even just living frugally in order to save some money. If you do find yourself in work, the skill of living frugally will be a real boon to you.
Try living without meat
This isn’t an ethical choice so much as a cost-based one. It’s entirely possible to get protein and other nutrients from vegetables, pulses, and different sources that aren’t based on meat. Good-quality animal product is expensive, and living frugally is no reason to scrimp on your meal quality. You can make tons of flavorsome, healthy, and incredibly cost-effective vegetarian meals with not much money at all. Consider living at least partially vegetarian if you’d like to live low-budget in 2019 and you won’t regret it.
Walk more
We know it sounds obvious, but walking more has manifold benefits. Not only will you save money on public transport or a car if you run one, but you’ll also find yourself to be more healthy and fit as time goes on. Sometimes, not having a lot of money can be detrimental to your mental health. This is something walking can really help you with. Simply being outside and immersing yourself in nature can trigger positive feelings in your mind, and walking (or any form of exercise such as running) can trigger your dopamine response.
