Liz Truss announces public sector pay rises in the House of Commons – Daily Mail

Bumper increases were announced today for around a million public sector workers – with prison officers getting 2.75 per cent and police 2 per cent. The end of the 1 per cent pay cap – which has limited annual rises for six years – has been confirmed by the Treasury. But there are complaints that the money for the salary boosts will have to be found by departments from existing budgets. Jeremy Corbyn and unions are also still demanding 5 per cent hikes, saying people need to catch up after years of wage stagnation.

Greece: Locals flee homes by boat as houses engulfed in flames - Daily Mail

Tue Jul 24 , 2018
A mother and son from Poland were among the dead when the vessel flipped in the water after picking up guests from a hotel in Mati as forest fires tore through the resort, 25 miles from Athens. In the same village, holidaymakers and locals were burned alive, some of them trapped in their cars in traffic jams (main), as hundreds tried to flee the raging inferno. Charred bodies were found on a narrow road clogged with traffic in the village, which a local mayor said 'no longer exists'. Some survivors spent hours choking on clouds of ash at the edge of the water (inset) as they waited for help. In the same resort, horrified officials found 26 bodies, apparently families, huddled tightly together in 'a final attempt to protect themselves'. Officials have asked for US drones 'to observe and detect any suspicious activity' as it emerged 15 fires had started at the same time in three different areas near Athens - possibly by criminals intending to ransack homes once they were abandoned by fleeing residents.
