If your kid loves drums and their birthday is coming up, you might want to gift them a kid’s drum set. However, if you don’t have an idea of what to look for when buying a drum set, you will inevitably have a hard time picking a top notch product. To help you with this, we list the five things you must look out for when purchasing a drum set for your little one.
Age Of The Child
The first thing to consider is the age of the child. All drum sets, despite being labeled as being for ‘kids’, cannot be used by children of all ages. If your child is about 4 to 5 years old, then he will require a drum set targeted at children up to 8 years. And if your child is about 6 or 7 years old, then it is ideal to get them a drum set which is targeted at children aged up to 11 years. In addition to ensuring that they are comfortable with it, this will also make sure that your kid is able to use the instrument of about 3 or 4 years before you get them a new one.
The drum set will most probably be placed in your kid’s room. As such, you should check whether the instrument will properly fit in the room. It should not be too big that it restricts the child from moving around freely.
As a general guideline, you should get a drum set which has a bass drum with a diameter of about 14 inches for kids aged less than 10 years old. This will make sure that the children can reach the pedals. If your kid is older than 10 years, then consider getting a set with a bass drum having a diameter of 16 inches or so. The drum set should also be adjustable so that you can adapt it to make your child feel more comfortable while using the instrument.
Be sure to check out what material the drum set is made of. Most of the cheap options that you find in the market will be made of low-grade plastic which won’t last many months. In fact, your kid might end up breaking it easily. As such, it is better to invest in a strong, sturdy drum set, like those made from toughened, extra strong plastic and other materials. This will ensure that it lasts longer and your kid can bang as much as he wants on the drum set without worrying whether the force he uses will break it or not.
Look for the extras coming with the drum set. Many of them usually give a pair of drumsticks, training DVDs or books, drum keys etc. free with the purchase. As such, if you find a drum set that does not give such freebies, you should definitely look for other brands and models.
And despite checking for the above factors, if you are still unsure as to which drum set to get for your child, then check out this post which lists out the 10 best kids/junior drum sets of 2017. This should enable you to choose the right drum set.
