Getmybuzzup: Tell us a little about yourself?
Mann J: I go by the name of Mann J. I’m an 18-year-old rapper/singer/songwriter. I’m from Houston, Texas, and I’ve been rapping, writing songs, stories poems and all that other stuff basically since I learned how to write.
Getmybuzzup: How long have you been in the music industry?
Mann J: I don’t know about being in the music industry. But I’ve been in music since I was 15 so a little over 3 years.
Getmybuzzup: How did you get started in the first place?
Mann J: Umm. I actually first got interested in doing music as a hobby at first because back in middle school I had this group of friends that I would have these cyphers and freestyle rapping sessions with and it started out as just fun. And more people kept telling me how good I was so I figured I’d go farther and bought my own recording equipment (a mic, a laptop, monitors, and software) and started recording my freestyles and remixes to other songs back then. The discussion for the best laptop for music production doesn’t seem to come to an end when he keeps talking about how his laptop is everything to him. Enjoy this video stream below after the jump.
Getmybuzzup: How would you describe your sound?
Mann J: (laughs) I always say the same thing. My sound is me. My sound is whatever I’m feeling at that time. How I feel or what I’m feeling at the time I’m writing or vibing is whatever I make. But I try to stay to live, fun, and positive.
Getmybuzzup: Who are your inspirations in the music industry?
Mann J: People who I get a good vibe from and are really talented in lyricism, vocals, in their melodies, and or I just feel good listening to them, because I can pull inspirations from to maybe put into my music. People like J.Cole, Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, G-Eazy, Logic, Wale, Machine Gun Kelly, Andre 3000, just to name a few although I really could go on.
Getmybuzzup: What are you currently working on?
Mann J: I am currently working on a single project as well as promoting two singles I have out already “Diamonds” and “Just Know ( I See You)“. And I have begun the release process for a new EP I have coming out called ‘One Week‘. Which I’m pushing to have out by the end of July.
Getmybuzzup: What is the concept behind your latest project?
Mann J: The concept behind my latest project was to make a sampler so I chose an EP that will be composed of 7 songs that showcased my overall creativeness, lyricism, and new direction I was not only taking with my music but my life. Getting out of procrastnativeness and other bad habits and stepping into a new light.
Getmybuzzup:Any plans on touring to promote your latest project?
Mann J: Yes I do plan to have a few shows in line. Everyone can follow me on Twitter and Instagram @_mannj to see where I’ll be going and when. Or just go to mannjmusic.com
Getmybuzzup: What did you buy with your first check off music?
Mann J: Bought more studio equipment (laughs)
Getmybuzzup: What is the best piece of advice in this business you actually followed?
Mann J: Brand yourself and plan everything at least 1-2 months in advance. Branding is key so people who find you can remember you, and plan everything 1-2 months ahead of schedule because you want to have all your i’s dotted and t’s crossed as much as possible before you do any project or else it’ll be even more difficult to get going.
Getmybuzzup: Will you be collaborating with any other artists on this project or in the future?
Mann J: On this project yes. This dope producer/singer/rapper/songwriter from the Chi named Clark Makes Hits and this group he has around him called The Rebles. All of them are dope and amazingly talented! They’ll be on ‘One Week’ on one or two songs. And before I forget to mention Clark produced every beat on there too, so shout out to him for that. And I recently back in March started my own collective of artists or label called Fire Track Music Group. And I will be working with ALL if them so keep watching me and we’ll all be coming out together really soon.
Getmybuzzup: Do you think your music is mostly enjoyed more for the beats or for the lyrical flow and content?
Mann J: Both. Because I pay attention to both. The beat and production have to be good and I drop bars, a hook, or both
after that most times. For me to even make a song they both have to be on point before I start recording or it doesn’t
happen. I pay attention to that and I’m strict on all of that and people who listen to me do notice and let me know.
They appreciate me doing that.
Getmybuzzup: What area do you need to improve on in regards to your career? (Example: Better production, Delivery, Stage presence, etc..)
Mann J: Stage. Because I have some things I want to start doing on stage. I’m trying to make it all the way lit!
Getmybuzzup: What’s your all-time favorite song?
Mann J: (Laughs) I’m a fan of too much music. I don’t really have one.
Getmybuzzup: In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?
Mann J: Influential and successful. In my opinion there are too many artists in hip-hop doing their thing that have their own overall mass following. So that’s hard to say because a lot of people are doing their thing and I don’t want to take anything away from anybody.
Getmybuzzup: Who have been some of your favorite artists that you’ve been able to work with?
Mann J: The artists on Fire Track Music I told you I’ve been working with. All of them are other worldly talented and all of them are fun to work with.
Getmybuzzup: How do you feel about the current state of music?
Mann J: It’s good and bad. The bad to me is that so many people sound exactly alike and so many are trying to follow the same wave. The good is that now more than ever from how I see the business used to be run vs how it’s run now is that the artists are freer than ever to have control over themselves with so many new resources and outlets. And it’s bred so many new, wonderful, creative ideas.
Getmybuzzup: What is your main goal as far as music?
Mann J: To be happy. And make those who like my music happy, as well as continue to make my monetary benefit off of it. A lot of people say they want the fame and everything that follows, I don’t care about that. As long as me and those who support my music are happy with what I do and I can continue to make money I’m alright. I could say I want to one day be considered the best of all time which I do. Who doesn’t. But that’s a loaded gun,a vague statement. What exactly is the best you know? So I’ll just keep doing me; that’s the best thing to do.
Getmybuzzup: Who Would you say your music relates to the most?
Mann J: People who like to think, people who like to have fun, people who like to feel happy and smile,
people who feel down, in short people who like to think and feel. Because that’s all my music is. My thoughts and feelings.
Getmybuzzup: What separates you from other artists? (What’s makes you different?)
Mann J: My lyrics and delivery. My wordplay, punch lines, lessons, and metaphors combined with my style of delivery are rare. And I know they are.
Getmybuzzup: When you’re not in the studio, What do you like to do for fun and relaxation?
Mann J: (Laughs). I’m a mixture of a stay at home book reader and a party guy. I’m half and half.
Getmybuzzup: If you could work with any producer who would it be?
Mann J: Pharell Williams; Because he’s so versatile. He could produce my entire album and it’d sound like I had 8 or 9 different producers on there.
Getmybuzzup: What’s the biggest highlight of your career thus far?
Mann J: Having my music mentioned and featured in blogs and other publications. It always makes me happy to see that.
Getmybuzzup: What artist music are you currently a fan of?
Mann J: Quite a few. J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, G-Eazy, Logic, Kehlani, Kevin Gates, Travis Scott, Childish Gambino, Machine Gun Kelly.
Getmybuzzup: When performing live what are some of the things you do to get the crowd involved?
Mann J: Mostly talking to them and hyping them up. Getting them jumping. And dancing.(Laughs) I want to start crowd surfing too.
Getmybuzzup: When performing and the crowd is singing along how does that energy make you feel?
Mann J: If they sing along its the best feeling while on stage. It’s indescribable.
Getmybuzzup: What can we expect from you in the future?
Mann J: A lot. Too many things to name right now. But to keep it short and simple. Expect for me to keep growing.
Getmybuzzup: Anything else ya’ll wanna add?
Mann J: Hit me up all over social media! I might hit ya back!(Laughs)
Getmybuzzup: Where can the fans check out for your music?
Mann J: Everywhere. All major digital stores and streaming services (iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play, Amazon, Spotify, IHeart Radio, Pandora, Sound Cloud, Tidal, etc.)
