Album Stream: Mozzy | Gangland Landlord [Audio]

By Jack Barnes

Today, revered Sacramento rapper Mozzy dropped his most impactful work to date with Gangland Landlord. The 18-track project, released via Mozzy Records/EMPIRE, is a follow up to his critically-acclaimed 2017 album 1 Up Top Ahk and also serves as a sequel to his 2015 release Gangland LandscapeGangland Landlord showcases Mozzy’s ability to evolve his sound without compromising lyricism, which is especially apparent by his last four single releases–the gospel instrumental backings on “Thugz Mansion” feat. Ty Dolla $ign and YG (which just surpassed 4 million YouTube views), the hard-hitting beat on “Not Impressive”, the softer 90s-inspired vibe of “Walk Up” and the signature NorCal undercurrent on “Choke On Me.” The elevated project also boasts features from Bay area legend Too $hortYo GottiScHoolboy Q and Blac Youngsta, among others. 2018 has been a banner year for Mozzy given his placement on the Black Panther movie soundtrack, a strong festival set at Rolling Loud Bay Area and a shoutout from Kendrick Lamar at this year’s Grammy Awards. The Gangland Landlord album is a culmination of not only a successful year but 15 plus years of hard work. In celebration, Mozzy curated an intimate album listening experience last week at E.P. & L.P. Rooftop in Los Angeles; Too $hort and P-Lo were in attendance. At the event, he revealed his limited edition Gangland Landlord Deluxe Box Set, now available for purchase at

Mozzy is also hosting the Provide For Your People giveback event for kids at Fourth Avenue Park in Sacramento tomorrow–Saturday, October 6th–from 10am-2pm. Giving back to at-risk youth in the rough neighborhood he grew up in is vital to him. At the event, he will be repaving the basketball court, providing hair cuts, and handing out 400 backpacks, school supplies, shoes and more.

Authenticity is like pornography—you know it when you see it. Or hear it, in the case of Mozzy, who makes music about his life growing up on the streets of Sacramento’s challenging Oak Park neighborhood. Over the last few years, he’s emerged as one of hip hop’s most essential storytellers. He raps with unmistakable patina of truth about the grinding realities of drugs, gangs and violence. Mozzy’s father was a felon and his mother was absent; he was raised by aunts and his grandmother, a member of the Black Panther Party. Mozzy grew up with an intimate understanding of the drug trade, both the luxurious lifestyle it can provide and the drastic risks it carries. When he started rapping, he was determined to present street narratives with the nuance they deserve. Mozzy first acquired national attention in 2015, when he released a series of full-lengths including Yellow Tape Activities and Bladadah. He caught the eye of a number of national outlets with his compelling blend of richly detailed narratives and hard-hitting production infused with lush NorCal funk. Mozzy’s recent features include “Seasons” (with Sjava and Reason) on the Black Panther movie soundtrack and “Too Brazy” on YG’s Stay Dangerous album.
