Today, on the anniversary of Tupac Shakur’s untimely death, Sacramento rapper Mozzy pays homage to the hip-hop icon with his new single “Thugz Mansion” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and YG. It’s a fitting collaboration given all three artists rep the West Coast. Mozzy’s socially conscious lyrics matched with the gospel instrumentals are reminiscent of the smooth gangsta rap sound that Tupac helped popularize in the 90s. Mozzy shares with Billboard, “Watching Tupac struggle and then overcome the struggle was one of the main reasons I idolized him growing up.” The official music video (directed by SUJ and David Camarena) includes a cameo by Demetrius Shipp Jr., the actor who played Tupac Shakur in last year’s biopic All Eyez on Me. Production credits on “Thugz Mansion” include DJ Swift, Dave-O, Ben Billions and Mook On The Beat. Enjoy this video stream below after the jump and please share this with friends.
Off the heels of Mozzy’s latest release, “Not Impressive”, “Thugz Mansion” marks the next single from his highly anticipated studio album, Gangland Landlord, dropping October 5th via Mozzy Records/ EMPIRE. In addition to Ty Dolla $ign and YG, the album boasts features from Yo Gotti, Blac Youngsta, YFN Lucci and ScHoolboy Q, among others. “We didn’t wanna force it with the wrong person just for clout,” says Mozzy. “Everybody is authentic.” It’s a deserved victory lap for an artist who’s cultivated hype the old-fashioned way: building a deep, loyal fanbase in his city. This Sunday, September 16th, Mozzy will hit the NorCal stage at Rolling Loud Festival Bay Area along with a few special guests.

Authenticity is like pornography—you know it when you see it. Or hear it, in the case of Mozzy, who makes music about his life growing up on the streets of Sacramento’s challenging Oak Park neighborhood. Over the last few years, he’s emerged as one of hip hop’s most essential storytellers. He raps with unmistakable patina of truth about the grinding realities of drugs, gangs and violence. Mozzy’s father was a felon and his mother was an addict; he was raised by aunts and his grandmother, a member of the Black Panther Party. Mozzy grew up with an intimate understanding of the drug trade, both the luxurious lifestyle it can provide and the drastic risks it carries. When he started rapping, he was determined to present street narratives with the nuance they deserve. Mozzy first acquired national attention in 2015, when he released a series of full-lengths including Yellow Tape Activities and Bladadah. He caught the eye of a number of national outlets with his compelling blend of richly detailed narratives and hard-hitting production infused with lush NorCal funk. Mozzy’s recent features include “Seasons” (with Sjava and Reason) on the Black Panther movie soundtrack and “Too Brazy” on YG’s Stay Dangerous album.
