This week’s guest on Questlove Supreme is soulful songstress Nelly Furtado.  Check out the latest episode of Questlove Supreme with Nelly Furtado only on Pandora Radio here.

On her first album, WHOA NELLY:
“I got real lucky.  I had these amazing seasoned people behind me.  And they believed in everything I did.  And Lenny Waronker came into the studio when we were almost done…And he looked at me and he goes “Savor this moment.  You will never make music like this again because you’re starting out and your impression and the way you think and the way you create will never be the same again.”
On being different and how it affected her music:
“I’ve always had olive skin. Do you know what I mean? I was aware of that because I grew up in a small town British colony. I was the only ethnic kid in my class in kindergarten. So it’s all relative. And so by the time I was done with my first record and I was doing Powerless, I was like, “Well, what about who I am I really? You know what I mean? What I’m really about and what I do want to say on this next record?” So I started talking about– the next record, I have a song called Fresh Off The Boat. My parents are immigrants. I was born in Canada. I have a song called Picture Perfect about my dad’s immigrant dream of coming to Canada and have everything look so good in the old ’70s photographs when he’d look at it…”
On working with industry greats Jimmy Iovine and Timbaland:
“So Jimmy Iovine actually told me to go work with Timbaland again…He was like, “You guys made a promise with the work you’ve done together and you haven’t fulfilled on it. I think you should go to Miami. Timbaland’s in a really great creative space right now.” And I was like, “Sure.” At that point, I had already worked with Pharrell, Scott Storch, Nellee Hooper in England. I was just enjoying my record contract, flying around with my daughter, recording with people. So I was like, “Okay. Sure.” And so, because she’s a toddler. She’s not in school yet or anything. So I’m just having fun. So we flew to Miami; I worked with Tim. First day, speaker caught fire, straight up. We did Maneater and the speaker caught fire.”
