New Project: RAY BLK | Empress [Audio]

By Jack Barnes

Winner of the coveted BBC Music Sound Poll 2017, (the only unsigned artist to ever win this award) and MOBO nominated Ray Blk, follows her hard-hitting debut single “Run Run” and equally powerful follow up “Empress”, with the release on October 26th of Empress. This wonderfully diverse 8-track set is a collection of songs, which the South London singer/songwriter/artist, describes as a “Project.”  The different themes and styles explored across Empress reveal an artist not afraid to address difficult and complex issues with genuine understanding, depth, humor and candor.  From the youth crime issues at the heart of “Run Run”, to the empowering anthem “Empress” to the heartfelt and universal lyric of ”Mama,” “Empress,” presents an artist with a lot to say and the will and skill to say it. Fans will have a chance to hear the new songs at Ray’s headlining London show at The Forum, Kentish Town, on Thursday March 28th. If you can’t wait that long, Ray will be the special guest on Rudimental’s UK tour later this month, including a date at Alexandra Palace on Saturday October 27th. “A huge thank you to these beautiful girls & their parents for letting them join me for the cover. This project is to uplift, encourage and inspire everyone who’s ever felt like they’re not good enough because of what they look like or where they come from. This one’s for the new generation.” – Ray Blk

Ray has also just completed a school’s tour across London, the aim to motivate and empower young people aged 12-18 by sharing stories and offering advice as a successful role model from their community or nearby neighborhoods.
The Empress Project track-listing is as follows:
1. Run Run
2. Paradise
3. Got My Own
4. Girl Like Me
5. Mama
6. Empress
7. Don’t Beg
8. Just A Kid
Ray BLK delivers the brash honesty of rap music with her unique blend of soul and R&B spirit. She intricately weaves between genre boundaries borrowing the elements she requires to reach her goals. “I feel proud when my music connects with people,” says the 23-year-old, real name Rita Ekwere, who was born in Nigeria and raised in Catford, South London. Lyrically, RAY’s music is very candid; she isn’t trying to gloss over situations and paint her life as a fairytale. “I say it how it is,” she admits. “The music that I love is the stuff that gives it to you raw. Then you can really connect with it.” The surname BLK that she’s adopted, is a constant reminder of her values: Building Living Knowing.

RAY BLK’s debut EP ‘Durt’, a diverse seven track mini-album, established Ray as an important and powerful new artist in UK music, an artist whose upbringing and surroundings assuredly shaped her vision. Truly authentic, relatable and always honest, “The Empress Project” will confirm that RAY BLK is here for the long run.
