Cleveland-based first-generation Nigerian-American and recent Wilberforce University graduate, neo-soul rapper Nnena (née Nnena Adigwe) has released“Lovesick” today — the first signing and debut single on Bad Robot’s new independent record label Loud Robot. Produced by Charles Scott IV, the song comes alongside a gripping video produced by Bad Robot and directed by rising star writer-director and Sundance hitmaker JD Dillard (Sleight, Sweetheart). Enjoy this video stream below after the jump and please share this with friends.
A record sprung from passion, heartbreak and taking back power, “Lovesick” celebrates our flaws and breaks down how the different sides of one’s self reacts, responds and repairs after loss. Revered for her humor and ferocity, the multi-talented artist also made many of the video’s character costumes which represent her own aspirational personas.
Nnena’s inspiration comes from female MC storytelling elites. Lauryn Hill, Aretha Franklin, Missy Elliot and Queen Latifah line the inside locker of her mind. She has taken her hard-hitting hooks and flowing melodies across the US, performing alongside WS Boogie, Mayorkun and Trinidad James. “This project is a diary of musical secrets coming to light by the right type of bitch,” she says. “A liberating fuck you to anyone who has felt pain by anyone. I want my music to be the light at the end of a damaged person’s tunnel.”
