One of the most harrowing, yet subtly beautiful songs to be released in 2018 is titled “Murder On My Mind” by YNW Melly, an upstart rapper from Gifford, FL who’s made a name for himself with a slew of melodic ballads, a facet of his artistry that he accredits to childhood obsessions with the likes of Michael Jackson and Usher.
The song is centered around a horrifying incident, in which Melly shot and killed his best friend after being startled by him in a stairwell. Its video goes so far as into re-enact the aftermath of the shooting, while Melly painfully belts out his emotions donning an MJ-esque red jacket. (Zippers to boot.) In another video, Melly highlights his gun brandishing abilities on a song called “Slang That Iron,” a deft flip of the Chris Brown classic “Say Goodbye.”
“Everybody wants to do it aggressive,” Melly says about his unique delivery. “I’m still saying some gangster shit, but I’ma do it with an R&B melody. Just to grab you.”
On the latest episode of #OpenSpace, Melly opens up about his affinity for melody, how he deals with pain and emotional suffering, the advice he’d share with people dealing with similar tragedies, and much more.
