Getmybuzzup: Tell us a little bit about Dakú Lights?
Dakú Lights: We are an alternative pop band based here in London, U.K. Our members are Bhavini (Who is of Indian descent), Haiiiro (Who is of mixed Chinese and English descent) and Panda (Mixed Caribbean and Irish). The whole concept behind Dakú Lights is playing with what we call light and dark sounds, as Daku means “Dark” in the Japanese language and we think it allows us to create a style of music that is quite fresh. Our visual concept is playing with colours and lights and using a particular colour to represent each member and their personality. Bhavini is red to match her fiery persona, Haiiiro is pink/orange because he is extremely relaxed and Panda is purple because of his deep and mindful ways. That way, we are always noticeable to people.
Getmybuzzup: How long has the group been in the music industry?
Dakú Lights: We just celebrated our one year anniversary; we’re still relatively new to the industry and are still learning but we have taken that time to grow organically as a band and really develop both our sound and our friendship. We aim to be in the industry for many more years to come too!
Getmybuzzup: How did the group get started in the first place?
Dakú Lights: We were all working on individual solo projects and careers at the time but it was through a chance discussion online, believe it or not, that we met! We just realised that we all had similar interests and decided to meet up and have a jam session. It was from there that we started hanging out more often and eventually, before we knew it, Dakú Lights was born!
Getmybuzzup: How would you describe the group’s sound?
Dakú Lights: We would describe our sound as eclectic pop; the reason for that is because we have actively embraced the fact that all three of us enjoy listening to very different music but music that we are able to mix together to create something unique. Bhavini is a fan of R’n’B, Haiiiro a fan of LoveTrap and Panda a fan of K-POP and so we played around with taking influences from all three, and others such as EDM and even Indie. We’re very proud of our sound; we have also played with the idea of Dark and Light sounds, creating a theme in our music. For example, our tracks “Over” and “Say No More” are described as a Dark sound because they are very melancholy and moody whereas “Set Me Free”, “Run Away” and “Bubblegum” are in the Light sound because they are upbeat, poppy and very vibrant. We think it’s a really interesting concept.
Getmybuzzup: Who are some of the group’s inspirations in the music industry?
Dakú Lights: There are a lot to name, we’ve asked each other this and we can rarely pin point the same answers each time but if we were to name the names that consistently pop up, it would be Mura Masa, The Chainsmokers, Adele and K-POP groups BTS, BlackPink and Big Bang. There are so many new and fresh artists debuting all of the time at the moment though, that we’re always being inspired. We want to be one of those debuting on a larger scale soon too!
Getmybuzzup: What is the group currently working on?
Dakú Lights: At the moment, we are currently back in the studio, writing new material as we would like to release a full album later in the year. However, our main focus at the moment is just building our fan base as much as possible. We are completely hammering away at raising our social media profile and are working on our YouTube channel too. We just want to promote our EP ‘illumiiinate’ as much as possible so that people have an introduction to Dakú Lights.
Getmybuzzup: What is the concept behind Dakú Lights latest project?
Dakú Lights: With our latest EP ‘Illumiiinate’, we included five songs that we developed over time. The EP was definitely more towards what we describe as our Light Sound as it featured more upbeat songs. For the latest project, our new album, we want to really introduce more of the Dark Sound and we think we have some really interesting tracks coming up that flow in that vein of music. We’re playing around with an album title that is the complete opposite of ‘Illumiiinate’.
Getmybuzzup: Any plans on touring to promote Dakú Lights latest project?
Dakú Lights: We definitely aim on touring as much as possible across the summer. We are very much perfectionists so we are currently tackling our stage performance and routines, rehearsing as much as possible because we want our string of shows to be great for not only any fans we have gained but casual audience members who may not have heard of us. We have plans to tour up and down the U.K for the remainder of the year but theres potential to perform internationally at some point this summer too.
Getmybuzzup: What is the best piece of advice in this business that Dakú Lights actually followed?
Dakú Lights: The best piece of advice we have received, and have certainly stuck to, is learn your sound and embrace it. We are so happy with the music that we have produced and when we hear something, we can immediately say “That’s us!” Or “that’s not us!”. We feel that there have been bands or singers in the past whose sound have been a little misjointed and its made it difficult to connect to their sound; We don’t want that.
Getmybuzzup: Will Dakú Lights be collaborating with any other artists on this project or in the future?
Dakú Lights: We will! We will be collaborating with a good friend of ours called Janethan who is currently building up to releasing a string of his hits. His profile on YouTube has just recently shot up since he did a cover of a popular KPOP song, which the actual artist saw, shared and commented on. He helped us with one of the tracks on ‘Illumiiinate’ and so it felt natural to ask him to actually feature on a track for the next album! We also would love to collaborate with other producers too. Haiiiro produces all of our tracks but we would like to open up to collaborations so if anyone would like to work with us, then we welcome ideas and suggestions.
Getmybuzzup: What area do Dakú Lights need to improve on in regards to their career? (Example: Better production, Delivery, Stage presence, etc..)
Dakú Lights: We are still very new, as we are now in our second year together, so there is definitely things to improve on. We think that everybody, no matter who they are, can always improve in their vocal technique and that is something that we are already investing in, so we can be the best we can be. We would say better stage presence purely because we want to implement equipment into our shows and for us to actually be playing our instruments ourselves but funding that is very expensive. We would like our shows to be as immersive as possible so we think we can always keep developing how we perform.
Getmybuzzup: What’s Dakú Lights all-time favorite song?
Dakú Lights: That’s a really hard decision, there are many to choose from but if we based it off of which song where we were most consistently singing since its release, it would be probably be ‘Closer‘ by The Chainsmokers. We love that song, its so catchy and we just wish it had been produced for us!
Getmybuzzup: In Dakú Lights opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?
Dakú Lights: We would say Mura Masa; we think he has helped pave the way for a particular sub-genre of pop that wouldn’t necessarily be as prominent as it is now if he hadn’t have been releasing the absolute belters that he has. We know his profile is still rising but based off of his career trajectory so far, we would name him.
Getmybuzzup: Who have been some of your favorite artists that you’ve been able to work with?
Dakú Lights: We havent been able to work with too many other artists yet, besides Janethan, as we have wanted people to really get to know Dakú Lights first. However, we really enjoyed working with Lydia Gabrielle Andrews, who was our sound engineer on the EP but she really helped us to get the best out of our music! She is so immensely talented as she sings too – she and Haiiiro recently uploaded a cover version that should be checked out as its beautiful!
Getmybuzzup: How do you feel about the current state of music?
Dakú Lights: We think music is in an interesting place. New artists, new sounds and new energies are being released every day now and there are far more opportunities for lesser known acts to be discovered. At one point, it felt like you needed to take part in reality television to be even given a shred of a chance but now, we think it’s the norm to allow new talent to develop and it means that the charts have such a wide range of sounds in it. We think right now is a good time to be in the industry.
Getmybuzzup: What is your main goal as far as music?
Dakú Lights: In terms of music, our main goal is to just keep making music that people enjoy. It is pop, one hundred percent, but its pop music that’s alternative to what people would expect from the genre. We do want to keep developing our sound with each and every project though. We would love to hear progression of sound, maturity and depth between the 1st album and what we hope would be at least the 10th!
Getmybuzzup: Who Would you say ya’ll music relates to the most?
Dakú Lights: We think our music will certainly appeal to younger people because it’s a genre of music that is very relative right now, particularly taking into account what is in the charts. But we do think anyone can enjoy our music – our lyrics are relatable, our beats are entertaining and we really try not think of a certain demographic when we make our music. Some of our best feedback has come from people of a slightly more mature demographic so we think anyone can enjoy it… Or we hope so!
Getmybuzzup: What separates ya’ll from other groups? (What’s makes ya’ll different?)
Dakú Lights: We think the fact that we are mixed gender, as well as mixed ethnicity, makes us visually different. We cant remember the last time there was a mixed gender pop group so we think we fill a void there. We also think that the fact that our entire light and dark concept allows us to play around with so many ideas and themes in our music really opens us up to exploring music that many other artists wouldn’t be able to touch because it broadens our scope musically. We don’t have to have as coherent a sound as some other artists, we get to play with moods more.
Getmybuzzup: When the group isnt in the studio, What do ya’ll like to do for fun and relaxation?
Dakú Lights: We’re actually planning a holiday to Portugal together! We’ve become extremely close so if we’re not working, we certainly hang out together. Recently, we all randomly met up at Haiiiro’s flat to cook a dish we’d seen a recipe of on Facebook! Whilst Bhavini teaches people at her dance school, Panda and Haiiiro might go to the gym together or just write new songs. Dakú has become a little family so we do do the small things together too.
Getmybuzzup: If you could work with any producer who would it be?
Dakú Lights: We would like to work with Mura Masa, of course, but one other particular producer that has caught our eye is Teddy and G-Dragon of YG Entertainment in South Korea. We love G-Dragon’s band, Big Bang, but he produces their songs too, alongside Teddy, and we think their sounds are incredible. So clever and to be honest, we’re surprised they’ve not reached this side of the globe on a more mainstream level just yet.
Getmybuzzup: What’s the biggest highlight of ya’ll career thus far?
Dakú Lights: The biggest highlight, so far, would be the release of our EP. Weve been through a lot of struggles to get to this point; finances are particularly difficult this early into a career. We did originally have five members to the group but due to circumstances like University and work they could no longer continue to commit to the band. Losing them was a major blow because we were so close and they were so talented so for us to finally reach the point where we could release our EP onto major platforms like Spotify and Soundcloud and Itunes just felt like all of those struggles were OK. It was more rewarding because we had had to fight for it. Releasing the first EP should, hopefully, be the most difficult.
Getmybuzzup: What artist music are ya’ll currently a fan of?
Dakú Lights: At the moment, we really like what Kygo is coming out with, his collaboration with Ellie Goulding was particularly great for us. We think his sound is really nice and engaging and we’re excited to hear more of what he has coming up in the future.
Getmybuzzup: When performing live what are some of the things ya’ll do to get the crowd involved?
Dakú Lights: We love to get in there with the crowd! What better way to make the audience feel involved than to actually be in there stood with them while we perform? We know we arent a household name and people may not necessarily know who we are yet but we feel like little touches like that, or even occasionally bringing someone up on stage with us, helps them to feel more like a part of our shows, because they are! Without those people, we wouldn’t be up there. Its important to remember that when we perform!
Getmybuzzup: When performing and the crowd is singing along how does that energy make ya’ll feel?
Dakú Lights: There’s no other feeling like it. Hearing people singing along to the songs that you have grafted over, spent hours nurturing, chopping and changing and perfecting really fills you with pride and a sense of real achievement. At the end of the day, the whole point of making music is to allow people to enjoy it. Without that, its pointless so for people to enjoy it, that’s the most gratifying thing in the world.
Getmybuzzup: What can we expect from the group in the future?
Dakú Lights: You can expect us to keep growing; both musically and as performers. We have begun this journey now and the only way is up. We want to be performing both domestically and internationally and you can expect us to work our hardest to keep bringing something fresh as often as possible!
Getmybuzzup: Anything else ya’ll wanna add?
Dakú Lights: We’re constantly trying to increase our reach, and people are enjoying what we do. We would just like to thank everybody who has been involved in our progress so far, be it working with us on the project, giving feedback to the tracks or even just listening to it. We just hope people can continue to keep supporting us by subscribing to all of our platforms on the internet and come watch our shows.
Getmybuzzup: Where can the fans go to check out your music?
