Enigmatic multi-platinum recording icon Prince ended his triumphant Piano & A Microphone Tour takeover of Australia and New Zealand with stellar reviews and a guarantee that every concertgoer left with a copy of his latest CD, HITNRUN PHASE TWO.
Applying a stroke of marketing genius, he first used with the release of his 2004 album, Musicology, the ticket price to the intimate shows included a copy of HITNRUN PHASE TWO, which was recorded fully in analog, giving it a lushness and human quality that defies the current computer-driven trend prevalent in practically all popular music today.
And that means that the world class entertainer and innovator, moved thousands of CDs at shows in Melbourne, Sydney and at his debut performances in New Zealand. At the concert in Perth, Australia, 15,000 CDs were in the hands of the Purple Collective sitting in the arena.
The Piano & A Microphone Tour has been lauded for Prince’s brilliance and attention to his craft in a one-to-one experience that is like no other. The multi-instrumentalist pulled from his vast 39-album catalog to build shows that boast a unique set list for each night.
The New Zealand Herald proclaimed that “There is much recorded evidence that Prince has more rhythm in his little finger than most humans will or can ever possess.” Then added, “He’s had so many hits he could ignore some or just patch others together into something strange and new.”
The Daily Review in Melbourne, Australia praised the show stating, “In Many regards the show was breathtaking. Prince’s showmanship had the audience eating out of his hand every second he was on stage. The clarity, quality and range of his vocals was superb.”
On February 28, Prince played two sold-out shows at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, California to more critical appreciation from the Bay-Area media. The San Francisco Chronicle noted that “He was in exquisite form.” The San Jose Mercury News simply stated, “Prince thrills…with Piano and A Microphone.
Prince returns to Oakland, tomorrow, Friday, March 4th for one additional performance in the round at Oracle Arena.
