Belly
By Jack Barnes
Rapper Belly (signed to Roc Nation and associated with XO) headlined Canada 150 – the festival around Canada Day celebrating the country’s 150 year. After giving an energetic performance in front of over 60,000 people, including hits of his like “Consuela” and “Might Not,” City of Toronto’s official twitter account tweeted “The #CityofTO apologizes for the inappropriate content during tonight’s closing performance at Nathan Phillips Square.”
As an immigrant from Palestine, Belly moved to Canada for these liberties, freedom of speech and free will to express yourself. Belly defended his performance to denounce censorship and said that “they will never censor my art” and that “organizers were made aware that I would be swearing during my show before I even flew in to Toronto”.
