RJMrLA & DJ Mustard
By Jack Barnes
Obliterating state-of-the-art west coast production with an addictive sing-song flow, RJMrLA is one of the most exciting up-and-comers in California. RJ asks the important romantic questions on the DJ Mustard-produced “Is It Mine,” his latest video. With sunny synths, bumping bass, and a sweetly-sung chorus from Ty Dolla $ign, “Is It Mine” is an emotionally honest plea for frankness and clarity in a relationship. Premiered by Highsnobiety, the video finds RJ and his woman struggling to overcome physical and emotional barriers, as lingerie literally rains from the sky. “Is It Mine” is the latest video from The Ghetto, a joint album by RJ and DJ Mustard, released in December, following the Complex-premiered lead single “Don’t Make Me Look Stupid,” which features an appearance from YG. Enjoy this video stream below after the jump.
Teaming up for their first collaborative full-length, RJ and Mustard share The Ghetto, a no-nonsense collection of speaker-knocking bangers. The eleven-track tape is a showcase for the chemistry between the two Los Angeles artists, with DJ Mustard expanding his production palette while keeping his trademarks and RJ rocking a melodic flow and turning out instantly memorable hooks. Featuring appearances from YG, Ty Dolla $ign, Rae Sremmurd, OT Genasis, 03 Greedo, Joe Moses, and Bino Rideaux, The Ghetto arrives as Southern California recovers from several devastating wildfires, such as the one depicted on the mixtape’s cover, adding urgency to RJ and Mustard’s party anthems. Praised by Pitchfork in a 7.2-scored review, The Ghetto arrives via 400 Summers, the new joint venture between YG’s 400 Records and DJ Mustard’s 10 Summers.
A radio favorite on the West Coast, RJMrLA has deep roots in L.A. and Atlanta. In recent years, RJ heated up the airwaves with hits like “Get Rich,” his collaboration with fellow 10 Summers rapper Choice and HBK’s Iamsu!, 2016’s “Flex,” which garnered over 4 million views on YouTube, and “Ride Wit Me,” featuring YG, which has over 4 million streams on Spotify. Earlier this year, RJ released MrLA, his first album for 400 Summers.Featuring appearances from YG, Quavo, Schoolboy Q, Ty Dolla $ign, Blac Youngsta, and Earl Swavey, MrLA is a trunk-rattling, club-busting collection of tracks, packed front-to-back with brilliant, sing-song bars. Praised by Pitchfork, who gave the album a 7.5, MrLA features the hit single “Brackin‘,” which Pitchfork called “L.A. rap at its finest.” Look out for more music from the 400 Summers-signed artist later this year.
