BIO: Rob Sky first appeared on the NYC music scene with his debut single, Beautiful, in 2007. His debut album, Right Now, was released in 2010 and followed with a tour in the UK. Rob has performed on stage with MJK, Blu Cantrell, and Monique. In 2017, he released TEN, an anniversary album that included previously unreleased tracks from the recording sessions of his debut album. After an 8 year hiatus, he returned to the studio and began recording again, releasing a few singles before finally completing his latest album, What’s Left of Me. Rob is already back in the studio, working on the follow-up.

Getmybuzzup: How long have you been in the music industry?

Rob Sky: I’ve been recording and singing since 2007.

Getmybuzzup: How did you get started in the first place?

Rob Sky: I was a musical theatre kid in middle school through college. So that’s where my love of singing comes from. My way of dealing with emotional experiences (good and bad) is just to write them down and get it out so it’s not bottled up inside anymore.

Getmybuzzup: How would you describe your sound?

Rob Sky: My sound is a fusion of pop/rock/r&b.

Getmybuzzup: Who are your inspirations in the music industry?

Rob Sky: I love Rihanna. She’s so fearless in everything she does & she’s never afraid to go out of her comfort zone and experiment in the studio.

Getmybuzzup: How do you go about writing a song and what is your process?

Rob Sky: Most of the time I already have the beat. Then to figure out the melody I’ll play the song on my laptop and sing into my phone. It’s just nonsense words to find the beat. Then once I lock the melody in, it’s just a matter of filling in the nonsense with actual meaning. Some songs like Outta My Way take me weeks to write, cause I’ll just keep going back and changing things. But others, like What’s Left of Me, pour out in an hour.

Getmybuzzup: What is the concept behind your latest project?

Rob Sky: It’s called What’s Left of Me. And basically it chronicles the emotions you go thru in a relationship, and you give it all you have and try your best, but for some reason, it didn’t work out. And this is what was left, these emotions that I’ve put into these songs.

Getmybuzzup: Any plans on touring to promote your latest project?

Rob Sky: Not right now. I’m currently back in the studio recording some more songs. We had so many ideas for this project that I couldn’t get them all down in time. So we might do a deluxe edition. Or I’ll pull an Ariana Grande and release another album in 3 months HAHA.

Getmybuzzup: What are must-haves when you’re in the studio working?

Rob Sky: The name is so gross but its the most AMAZING thing ever it’s a tea called Throat Coat. It has licorice and marshmallow root to soothe your throat.

Getmybuzzup: What is the best piece of advice in this business you actually followed?

Rob Sky: Don’t give up and ignore the haters.

Getmybuzzup: Will you be collaborating with any other artists on this project or in the future?

Rob Sky: I actually have a pretty big collab locked in for one of the new songs I’m doing. It’s a female rapper that was on Ellen recently. That’s all I’m allowed to say. HAHA.

Getmybuzzup: Do you think your music is mostly enjoyed more for the beats or for the lyrical flow and content?

Rob Sky: I think it’s 50/50. But my lyrics do tend to be on the deeper/more meaningful side.

Getmybuzzup: What’s your all-time favorite song?

Rob Sky: That’s impossible HAHA. But I’ll give you my 3 current faves!

  1. 88Rising – Let It Go
  2. Teyana Taylor – WTP
  3. Amber Run – I Found

Getmybuzzup: Who have been some of your favorite artists that you’ve been able to work with?

Rob Sky: I got to tour with Blu Cantrell in the UK that was pretty fun. My fave collaborator though is Matthew Kurz, who produces A LOT of my stuff.

Getmybuzzup: How do you feel about the current state of music?

Rob Sky: It’s SO OVERSATURATED! Which is a good and bad thing. Its bad cause if you’re trying to get heard- it’s near impossible. But it’s good because it pushes everyone to be better and make better music so they stand out.

Getmybuzzup: Any dream award shows you hope to one day play at?

Rob Sky: Grammys duh. HAHA

Getmybuzzup: Who would you say your music relates to the most?

Rob Sky: The Heartbroken. HAHA. I write a lot of breakup songs. I just find them more fascinating than love songs. Love songs are boring to me.

Getmybuzzup: When you’re not in the studio, What do you like to do for fun and relaxation?

Rob Sky: I’m a nerd. I LOVE to read. And play video games. I always have my Nintendo SWITCH with me.

Getmybuzzup: If you could work with any producer who would it be?

Rob Sky: RedOne.

Getmybuzzup: What is your dream venue to perform at?

Rob Sky: Madison Square Garden.

Getmybuzzup: What artist music are you currently a fan of?

Rob Sky: I’m obsessed with Teyana Taylor. I’m so mad her new album is so short! I wanted like 20 songs from her.

Getmybuzzup: What’s the name of the last book you read and by whom?

Rob Sky: It was called Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage. It was INSANE! So screwed up. I finished it in 2 days! It was that good.

Getmybuzzup: What can we expect from you in the future?

Rob Sky: I wanna do an all acoustic covers album. Just take some of my favorite songs and strip them down with just me and a piano or a guitar.

Getmybuzzup: Where can the fans check out for your music?

Rob Sky: I’m always sharing snippets etc on my Instagram @therobsky or go to https://linktr.ee/therobsky
