Shaney Poo Talks Music, Future Projects & More [Interview]

Shaney Poo

By Jack Barnes

Getmybuzzup: Tell us a little about yourself?

Shaney Poo: I’m born and raised in Boston, MA. I’m an artist, songwriter, performer and as of 2015 I started acting in a few indie films, so I guess its going real well so far. Every since I was young I would write rhymes and ideas on pieces of paper, I used to do it so much I had to keep shoe boxes. I come from a Haitian background and started singing in the church choir. In high school I started throwing parties with my friends, we actually started a crew. It was extra lit back then. I love cats, drinking hot tea, women and being inspired.

Getmybuzzup: How long have you been in the music industry?

Shaney Poo: It’s funny cuz somebody told me once “you ain’t in the music industry until you have a hit song” so I guess until that happens I’m on the outside looking in.
Getmybuzzup: What are you currently working on?
Shaney Poo: Well I’m always working on new material, not just music. Right now I have 2 projects out, they have a lot of great tunes on them. So now I’m just working on shooting some special aesthetic, but we’ll see what happens.

Getmybuzzup: Describe some of the benefits of managing a music label?

Shaney Poo: The biggest benefit is the amount of knowledge you learn through the experience, it’s very valuable. It’s like buying a fish versus knowing how to catch your own fish. It goes a long way.
Getmybuzzup: Describe some of the diffulcuties of managing a music label?

Shaney Poo: The biggest difficulty is having to handle mostly everything on your own. Sometimes it’s mentally and physically draining. Having a great team next to you is important.
Getmybuzzup: How would you describe the sound that comes from your label?
Shaney Poo: I call it B.L.A.C Pop. It has a double meaning to it. In my world, a true artist doesn’t limit themselves to a sound or just one aesthetic. We keep pushing for something new and authentic.

Getmybuzzup: Who are your inspirations in the music industry?

Shaney Poo: I’m really just a fan of guys I grew up listening to. Everyday life really inspires me more than anything.
Getmybuzzup: What are some of the currently projects coming from your label?

Shaney Poo: I don’t want to say too much but we got more music and other aesthetics to go with it. My whole thing is to not just limit myself to just making music, but you’ll see.

Getmybuzzup: What is the concept behind your latest project?

Shaney Poo: My most recent project is called “SkumBag King“. It’s a story and a reflection of my life the past year or two, it’s told in an unconventional way. I see it as a continuation from my debut project “Touch By An Angel” basically showing the other side of the coin.

Getmybuzzup: Will you be collaborating with any other artists on this project or in the future?

Shaney Poo: Yea, when it comes to my own music I’m usually the one who reaches out. I don’t do collabs with just anybody. It has to make sense and feel organic. The past few years I’ve been working with artist that I know personally, other than that I make music alone.

Getmybuzzup: What area do you need to improve on in regards to your music career? (Example: Better production, Delivery, Stage presence, etc..)
Shaney Poo: Honestly I need to get better at everything. I don’t do this just to be decent. I need to be the best version of me.

Getmybuzzup: What is your main goal as far as music is concerned?
Shaney Poo: When it comes to music I want to travel the whole world and inspire crowds and touch people’s lives. As far as it will take me, that’s how far I’m willing to go.
Getmybuzzup: Who Would you say your music relates to the most?
Shaney Poo: My music relates to anybody because I make it for everybody. All of my songs sound different from one another but the one common ingredient is Me.

Getmybuzzup: What separates you from other artists? (What’s makes you different?)
Shaney Poo: What makes me different is I’m Shaney Poo, I’m just being me. Everyone should just be themselves.

Getmybuzzup:  When your not in the studio, What do you like to do for fun and relaxation?
Shaney Poo: When I’m not in the studio I like to have conversations with interesting people, watch anime (I love anime), watch dope movies, working on other projects, go out and have a great time or just spending time with that special lady.

Getmybuzzup: If you could work with any producer who would it be?
Shaney Poo: I would work with Adrian Alston-Moore, he’s an old friend of mine and very talented. We worked on a lot of music together.
Getmybuzzup: What’s the biggest highlight of your career thus far???

Shaney Poo: Biggest highlight so far is performing in front of crowds and having people sing the music along with me…it feels amazing.
Getmybuzzup: What Can we expect from your in the future?

Shaney Poo: You can expect Shaney Poo.

Getmybuzzup: Where can the fans check out for your music?

Shaney Poo: Find me on my personal website or on YouTube.
