“Sneakerheadz” Documentary Examines Bright and Dark Sides of Sneaker Culture (GQ premiere) [Video]

By Jack Barnes

It started as a subculture, but has since become full-blown mainstream. Find out what it means to be a true sneakerhead.

Directed by David T. Friendly (co-producer of the Oscar nominated film Little Miss Sunshine), the documentary Sneakerheadz takes a look at the obsessive culture behind sneaker collecting. Enjoy this video stream below after the jump.

Hear from Wale, Mike Epps, Samantha Ronson, Futura, well-known collectors like Frank the Butcher and designers including Jeff Staple about sneaker culture and why owning 100 pairs is never enough. The documentary also takes a look at recent violence around the release of limited editions, the psychology behind collecting and, on the happier side, how designing sneakers has put smiles on the faces of children struggling with serious and terminal diseases.

GQ and Condé Nast Entertainment (CNÉ) are the first to release the film as FVOD (free VOD/streaming) following its theatrical release in August. The full documentary is live on GQ’s channel on The Scene, the digital storytelling platform from CNÉ, here.
