Internationally prolific contemporary artist Takashi Murakami will curate the Art Zone at ComplexCon, the music, retail, art and culture experience taking over Long Beach, Calif., Nov. 4-5, the company announced today. Additionally, Murakami returns this year to ComplexCon as a host committee member and is designing the event’s brand identity, lending his oversight to the overall design and aesthetic experience of ComplexCon.
“Takashi Murakami is the father of the ‘Superflat’ art movement, which is reflected in his art and is ever present in our contemporary culture — it is a spirit that refuses to be defined as just high brow or just low brow, it defies limiting definitions and emboldens collaboration among disparate people. This is the essence of ComplexCon. We are delighted that he will again bring his distinctive artistic ingénue to this year’s event,” said Marc Eckō, Founder and Chief Brand & Creative Officer of Complex Networks.
Takashi Murakami will be curating a section of his KaiKai Kiki artists, with original Takashi Murakami art work, sample figures, and merchandise; his collaborations with MADSAKI; new paintings from MADSAKI’s “Wife” series plus a special installation; Otani Workshop ceramics; works from select graffiti artists; and a showcase of his vintage Japanese toy collection.
Takashi has also invited Galerie Perrotin to ComplexCon with original artwork, limited edition prints, posters and other items that will be available at ComplexCon – including original artwork by Takashi Murakami, Josh Sperling and JR in addition to limited edition prints and items by Murakami, KAWS, Daniel Arsham, Hernan Bas, Paola Pivi, JR, Xavier Veilhan, Terry Richardson and more.
Additional experiences featured in the Art Zone will include the following:
- A curated space from The Seventh Letter
- A curated space by Hong Kong’s Avenue Des Art
- A custom installation by Michael Murphy brought by Wish Atl
- Displayed works by Matt Gondek brought by FUN
- Installations by Gangster Doodles, Paper Work NYC, and everyone’s favorite app Giphy
Additionally, Snarkitecture returns with an art installation in an exclusive pop-up on the show floor that includes a reimagining of their pillow lounge seen in 2016. Among the installations, everyone’s favorite app Giphy will also curate a unique immersive experience.
ComplexCon Art Zone sponsor 1800® Tequila has tapped artist MadSteez in a collaborative effort to bring the 1800 Lounge to life through custom designed seating, a bar and a live art installation which is anticipated to be one of the most photographed areas of ComplexCon. 1800 Tequila, along with MadSteez, will also be working with apparel brand Seventh Letter to create exclusive merchandise available only at the event, giving lounge visitors a piece of art designed by MadSteez as a takeaway from the 1800 Tequila experience.
