What better way to cool down in the Texas heat than popping the top on a Lone Star beer? Dallas’ waviest rapper/producer trio The Outfit, TX invited the city to their front yard to celebrate the relief and stress-free feeling of having all “All Bills Paid.” Mel’s drawling vocals are the linchpin of TOTX’s woozy sound, and on “All Bills Paid” they’re complemented by an edgy verse from JayHawk that preaches action over words, as well as spirited rhymes from fellow Dallas rapper Devy $tonez. Just a few weeks ago, Noisey debuted TOTX’s Deep Ellum EP, a compilation produced entirely by TOTX’s Mel andDorian that features a slew of undiscovered talent from their hometown scene. With the Deep Ellum EP serving as a statement for the camaraderie that exists within the Dallas scene, TOTX are preparing for the release of their anticipated follow-up album to 2013’s Cognac/Four Corner Room for later this year. Enjoy this video stream below after the jump.
If it’s not already, a spotlight should be signed on the Dallas hip-hop community after local rapperJustus appeared as one of the break-out artists on Dr. Dre’s Compton album. While Justus and Post Malone, who resides on the outskirts of the city, have gotten the industry co-signs that make them ones to keep an eye on, The Outfit, TX have established themselves as the torchbearers for what Passion of the Weiss called the “promethazine-spiked” Texas sound. It’s caught the attention of NPR andComplex, who ran huge interviews with TOTX last year. Awarded Best Rap Group from Dallas Observer in 2014, the trio’s critically acclaimed repertoire has distinguished them as one of Texas’ most eccentric groups. TOTX closed out 2014 by performing on the Red Bull Sound Select tour as openers for Run the Jewels. They’ve been busy in the first half of 2015, releasing several singles – an ode to their favorite bourbon with “Wild Turkey,” a collaboration with cross-state spitter Maxo Kream with “Ü,” and a strip club-ready anthem in “Big Daddy.”
