Urban Gamers League Kicks Off with Halftime Football Challenge – $1500???? Cash Prize at Stake!

Urban Gamers League

By Jack Barnes

The Urban Gamers League (UGL) kicks off with the “Halftime Football Challenge” on November 5, 2016 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at  Halftime Sports Bar. The single-elimination tournament consists of five rounds, with the top 16 registered players walking away with exclusive giveaways and/or cash prizes.  Enjoy this audio stream below after the jump.

The ultimate victor will win a $1500 cash prize and bragging rights as the best Madden player in the Bay Area. UGL’s inaugural event will ultimately position 32 of the best Madden 17 video game players in Northern California against one another in a battle of wits, football knowledge, and skill.  Despite the urban flair, this tournament is not for “faint of heart” gamers,  but rather for players that are dedicated to dominating their opponent and showing no mercy.

The Urban Gamers League was founded by Chuck Johnson to foster diversity in the technology/gaming space through events and education. In 2015, Americans spent $22 billion on video games, up 3% from the previous year, and a good portion of those dollars came from urban gamers.  As a gamer, Johnson will utilize his experience in event planning and entertainment management to make the UGL a success. Local creatives recognize Johnson and his storied history in entertainment and local activism. Oakland natives may remember him from his work on Soul Beat, but he has also spearheaded multiple projects for Showtime, BET, and the NFL as CEO of the Chuck Johnson Company.  Johnson’s love for entertainment and technology motivated him to create a platform that targets experienced urban gamers.  Instead of gearing their tournaments to teens and millennials, the UGL will pinpoint gamers in their late 20’s and beyond in order to promote the underserved genre of adult competitive gaming. UGL aims to take the already successful E-Sports format and infuse it with a hip-hop twist, providing better venues and celebrity hosts from the worlds of music and professional sports. Plans to expand to hosting tournaments for other video games as well as coordinate events designed to teach children how to create video games are currently in the works. Proceeds from UGL events will be donated to The David E. Glover Education and Technology Center, an East Oakland based tech program that teaches kids how to code.
