Rapper Vic Mensa “Destigmatize” Mental Health on Larry King

Vic Mensa

By Jack Barnes

Grammy-nominated rapper Vic Mensa sits down with Larry King for an all new season six episode of the Emmy-nominated series, “Larry King Now” and details his personal experiences that inspired his revealing new album – like struggling with mental health issues, drug abuse, and police profiling. He also dishes on tour mate Justin Bieber & their canceled tour, collaborating with Chance the Rapper and gets political talking Trump, how Obama disappointed him, and the quest for peace on Chicago’s streets. Enjoy this video stream below after the jump.

Vic Mensa wants to “destigmatize” mental health issues in the black community and explains to Larry King why mental health issues in the black community are often times ignored or downplayed, especially among black men who are afraid to “appear weak” if their struggles are revealed. “The traditional avenues for being a breadwinner and being a man in the black community were stripped from us […] so we had to develop certain other ideas of masculinity that often are very hyper masculine, very aggressive, and leave no room for vulnerability, and I believe that leads us to a place where we’re not able to be open and be honest about things going on in our brain because we don’t want to appear weak, and you feel that if you give any sign of weakness that you’ll be torn down.”

Rapper Vic Mensa has no hard feelings towards Justin Bieber, who cancelled the remainder of the tour in which Mensa was the opening act. Mensa says it was right of Bieber to “put his health first” instead of performing. He also talks about his recent Lollapalooza set with fellow Chicago native and friend Chance the Rapper, and hints that new music between the two is on the horizon. “I felt that was just a necessary moment of unity for our city because it’s often very divided. And yes, we’ve been talking about making new music.” Adding, “I grew up with Chance so I know him well and I think that he is dedicated to a lot of real things, a lot of things that people aren’t bringing into popular music.”
