The VPN or Virtual Private Network is a technology that allows a computer to send data on a public or shared network as if it were private. Its great advantage is that it hides the user’s real IP address. In this way, the platform will not know what your geographic location is and will load the native catalogue, that is, that of the United States. Some even allow you to configure the location from which you navigate.
There are many companies that offer this type of services, but the best and most used are Hide my Ass and Unblock US. Both offer configurations not only for your computer, but also for a wide variety of devices including video game consoles, screens and even Apple TV. A VPN service is expensive but if you have how to pay it, it is well worth it. One of the great advantages is that you do not have to break your head with the configuration of the equipment since on their website they detail step by step how to do it. Hide My Ass has a semi-annual fee of $ 39.99 or if you prefer, you can pay $ 9.99 every month. Unblock US is more affordable, has an annual fee of $ 49.90.
Free VPN services
The other side of the coin. The reality is that few work well and without complications. In addition, many only work in the browser and not on other devices. From my experience, there are two that do not cause many problems: Hello and Spotflux.
Both are available for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Spotflux, however, has a Premium version that is much faster than the free version and also has more support for mobile platforms. On the other hand, Hello! is a completely free platform. It even has extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.
To install them you just have to download the applications from their website and, by keeping them open while you browse, you can see the catalog of the United States. It even allows you to choose the country from which you want to access, this means that you can unlock restricted content from other platforms such as YouTube as well.
Apple TV and other devices
If your thing is not VPNs and you have an Apple TV, there is a less complicated technique to watch Netflix from the United States. All you have to do is change the DNS of your device. DNS servers (Domain Name System) relate domains on the web to the IP addresses connected to them. If you change the number to one from another country, you can see the US catalog directly on your device.
The only disadvantage is that you have to look for a DNS that works. With a quick Google search, you can get some, there are also forums dedicated to this task in which you will surely find one. Once with the number you have to follow these steps:
- In the menu of your Apple TV go to Settings> General> Network
- Select Wi-Fi if you are connected to a wireless or Ethernet network if you have it connected by cable
- Select Configure DNS> Manual
- Enter your new DNS and save the configuration
- Return to the main settings menu and turn off your Apple TV
- Disconnect the power cable and wait 10 seconds
- Connect the cable again and go to Netflix
If the service screen does not load, this means that the DNS you used does not work and you have to find another one. Repeat the process until you find one that works. This method also works for consoles such as PlayStation and Xbox, just change your DNS to manual mode in the network menu.
