“It’s crazy—my face is on a wall in Manhattan,” says DJ T.J. Mizell. “My man actually drilled with a hammer and tools to create this art piece.” Hennessy’s latest artist collaboration features a limited edition custom bottle design by Lisbon-based street artist Vhils, whose specialty is making the invisible visible using unusual tools like acid, drills and explosives. “My color palette was not colors, it was the layers of time,” says Vhils. “Graffiti writers were seen as someone who destroys, who vandalizes something. I really wanted to subvert this idea,. I wanted to go to an extreme of destruction.” T.J., son of the late great Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC fame, was moved by the tribute. “Usually people have to die to get their face put up,” he says. “My father has a really cool memorial in Hollis, Queens. I guess we kind of look alike.” With support from Hennessy, Vhils and T.J. connected to make history. Never stop, never settle.
