Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg
By Jack Barnes
One of the biggest Hip Hop concert tours of the year is doing its part to encourage voter turnout for the upcoming Presidential election. The Hip Hop Caucus’ Respect My Vote! campaign teamed up with “The High Road Tour” featuring Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa to hold voter registration and information booths during each U.S. city tour stop (see the official press release below). As you know, the tour is visiting major cities such as New York, Phoenix and Los Angeles, concludes on September 2nd.
Respect My Vote! is a non-partisan campaign that educates and engages youth, minority, and ex-felon voters through events, celebrity involvement, and social media. The Respect My Vote! booths at The High Road Summer Tour stops will allow attendees to register to vote, get more information on the election process, and learn how to stay connected to the issues that matter most to them.
As the tour and Respect My Vote! campaign make their way across the nation, I invite you to speak with Hip Hop Caucus President and CEO Revered Lennox Yearwood Jr. about the following topics:
- Important role the Hip Hop community plays in this election year
- The power of the youth and minority voter
- The fight for ex-felon voter registration rights
- Issues in disenfranchised communities (e.g. voter suppression, police brutality)
- Climate Justice in low-income communities
- Voter suppression and what you can do to make sure your vote is counted
Celebrating its third Presidential election cycle, Respect My Vote! impacts those frustrated with the political process in their state and local communities. A key emphasis of the campaign is to educate ex-offenders on their ability to vote as well as debunking the myth that if convicted of a felony, you permanently lose your right to vote. People can register to vote and pledge to vote at www.respectmyvote.com and learn voter laws by state. The campaign urges everyone to sign up to volunteer in their communities and spreading the word through their social networks online.
“This is an incredible opportunity to bring the power of the ballot to the people. With Respect My Vote! and how impactful voting is for achieving justice and opportunity, we can create an electoral revolution in a time when so many are looking for ways to affect change,” stated Hip Hop Caucus President and CEO, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Jr. “With the support of The High Road Tour featuring Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg, we can inspire fans to vote on the issues that matter most to them and by having their voices heard make change through our democracy.”
