If you’re looking for a great guitar for beginners and experienced guitar players alike, look no further than the Yamaha FD01S.
Yamaha was established in Japan in the late 1800s as a piano and reed manufacturer, The company has steadily grown in size and popularity ever since. Today, Yamaha is one of the largest manufacturers of musical instruments in the world, recognized for making some of the best guitars in existence. True to their roots, the company is also still known for their pianos, organs, drums, and other string instruments.
One of the most affordable pieces in the lineup, the Yamaha FD01S price is nearly impossible to beat at the tiny sum of only $149.99. With such a low cost guitar, it can be easy to think that it will be of lesser quality. With the FD01S, however, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
For starters, here are some of the guitar’s most important specs:
- Top: Solid spruce for high quality sound
- Top thickness: 3mm
- Sides: Nato (also known as eastern Mahogany)
- Back: Nato (also known as eastern Mahogany)
- Fingerboard: Rosewood
- Fingerboard: Rosewood
- Finish: Natural
- Weight: 6.2 pounds
- Dimensions: 42” x 18.5” x 5.7”
- Warranty: Limited Lifetime
The materials used in the making of this solid-wood guitar are the biggest contributors to sound. With the thick, straight-grain spruce that tops the FD01S, the guitar produces a richness of sound that can’t be matched by a similarly priced instrument with a laminate top.
Overall, the sound quality of the FD01S is excellent, which isn’t always the case with inexpensive guitars. For beginners, learning on such a fine-sounding instrument can
help develop the ear and make it easier to advance in their skills and grow as a musician.
Both the E and B strings on the Yamaha FD01S produce excellent treble sounds, and the guitar is capable of a lot of deep, rich bass. Some reviewers feel that the sound can be a bit over-bright, however a quick neck and string adjustment could easily solve that problem. For most beginners, this won’t be an issue at all. Other reviews note that the guitar is slightly better for strumming than finger-style, though this may not be the case for all musicians. With such great sound, the FD01S has often been compared to the significantly more expensive Yamaha FG700S in quality of output.
While there’s no such thing as a truly “one size fits all” instrument, it is true that this guitar is suitable for a wide range of playing abilities, from those who have never picked up a guitar to those who have been playing for years. Beyond the sound quality, the look of the guitar is excellent, with the light body and dark detailing making for a beautiful, traditionally appealing instrument. It’s easy to be impressed by the FD01S’ sleek, clean design.
As one of the few less expensive guitars made of real wood, the Yamaha FD01S is one of the best “bang for your buck” options. It’s almost impossible to buy a guitar of similar quality for such a low price. While technically this guitar has been discontinued by Yamaha, it’s still readily available across the Internet, including on sites like Amazon.com. Regardless of your playing level or experience, this guitar is the perfect instrument to grow with you as you advance.
