Singer / Songwriter Yona Marie talks New Single, Inspirations & More [Interview]

Getmybuzzup: Tell us a little about yourself?

Yona: My name is Yona Marie aka Rachel Marie and I’m a singer, songwriter and producer.

Getmybuzzup: How long have you been in the music industry?

Yona: I’ve been publishing songs and performing since I was 10 years old.

Getmybuzzup: How did you get started in the first place?

Yona: My family is full of musical talents; they raised me up in the music world.

Getmybuzzup: How would you describe your sound?

Yona: My sound is mostly soulful R&B with a hint of pop.

Getmybuzzup: Who are your inspirations in the music industry?

Yona: My number one musical inspiration is India Arie.

Getmybuzzup: How do you go about writing a song and what is your process?

Yona: I like to create my beats first most of the time (using Logic) starting from the rhythmic instrumentation, but sometimes I’ll just record an 8 bar melody that’s in my head and go from there.

Getmybuzzup: What are you currently working on?

Yona: I’m currently releasing singles and submitting them to licensing opportunities in hopes of getting my songs placed on a show like HBO’s Insecure.

Getmybuzzup: What is the concept behind your latest project?

Yona: My songs are heavily influenced by my time and energy spent in relationships.

Getmybuzzup: Any plans on touring to promote your latest project?

Yona: For now I’m going to focus on local performances is the DC area, but touring could be an option in the future.

Getmybuzzup: What did you buy with your first check off music?

Yona: I can’t remember that far back, but I’m sure it was food from a paid collaboration.

Getmybuzzup: What are must haves when your in the studio working?

Yona: Silence, my MacBook, good headphones, my phone (I forget lyrics a lot since I write so fast), and water.

Getmybuzzup: What is the best piece of advice in this business you actually followed?

Yona: Make your own opportunities because it will take a while before the major players will notice you.

Getmybuzzup: Will you be collaborating with any other artists on this project or in the future?

Yona: I’m waiting for my producer friend Eli Way to bless me with some new heat that I can sing on. One of our last tracks is my favorite collab.

Getmybuzzup: Do you think your music is mostly enjoyed more for the beats or for the lyrical flow and content?

Yona: I would say my voice content, only because I feel like I have to catch-up my lyrical talent and beat talent to my vocal talent since I have the most experience singing.

Getmybuzzup: What area do you need to improve on in regards to your career? (Example: Better production, Delivery, Stage presence, etc..)

Yona: Better production, more networking and gigs, and more consistency! I fell off major when I was working on a few business projects and didn’t make time to create.

Getmybuzzup: What’s your all-time favorite song?

Yona: Storm – Glenn Lewis. Simple and perfect.

Getmybuzzup: In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

Yona: Beyonce. No need to explain lol.

Yona: Mark Morrison, Eli Way, Tre Smooth, John Lass, J Ashley

Getmybuzzup: How do you feel about the current state of music?

Yona: The music world is overcrowded but I appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm.

Getmybuzzup: Any dream award shows you hope to one day play at?

Yona: The Grammys!

Getmybuzzup: What is your main goal as far as music?

Yona: It may sound crazy but I want to be lowkey successful, not super mainstream but well respected by those who are mainstream.

Getmybuzzup: Who would you say your music relates to the most?

Yona: Women in relationships with these crazy males out here lol.

Getmybuzzup: What separates you from other artists? (What’s makes you different?)

Yona: I’m heavily involved in the whole creative process.

Getmybuzzup: When you’re not in the studio, What do you like to do for fun and relaxation?

Yona: Chill near a beautiful body of water like I have no cares in the world.

Getmybuzzup: If you could work with any producer who would it be?

Yona: Timbaland

Getmybuzzup: When performing and the crowd is singing along how does that energy make you feel?

Read more here: "The 2018 midterm elections have been racked with concerns that state voting systems could be vulnerable to attacks by highly skilled Russian intelligence agencies looking to alter poll results. But over the weekend, participants in a hacking conference proved that those interested in shaping the history of American democracy don’t need the backing of an authoritarian government to wreak havoc. An 11-year-old boy changed fake voting results by hacking into an exact replica of Florida’s state election website in just 10 minutes, according to the organizers of DEF CON 26, an annual hacker convention. The competition pitted 39 kids, age 6 to 17, against one another to see who could hack into replica election systems of six swing states across the US. Thirty-five of the 39 kids completed the “exploit” and “tampered with vote tallies, party names, [and] candidate names” within 30 minutes, according to DEF CON."
