After years building a reputation as one of the most adventurous and melodic Atlanta rappers, Yung Bans is ready for stardom. Fusing his mutated melodies and hard-earned perspective into a futuristic aesthetic, Bans shares Misunderstood, his debut album. Painting a vivid picture of his life as a rising rap star, Bans uses his supernatural melodic instincts to turn each line into a hook, ping-ponging between luxurious images of rap life and the bleak street life from which he narrowly escaped with his musical ability. Brimming with a level of sonic detail that rewards headphone listening, Misunderstood doubl
To accompany the release of the album, Bans shares “Going Wild,“ a visual for the album’s opening track. Produced by Bugz Ronin, Ian Jeffry Thomas & Wondagurl, “Going Wild” is a defiant statement of purpose for Bans, as he proclaims through pitch-shifting vocals that he will never change for anyone. In the video, directed by Shea Motion (YNW Melly & Kanye West’s “Mixed Personalities”), Bans embraces his inner demons, conjuring a dragon made of smoke, dancing with twirling double-helixes, and sipping from the world’s largest styrofoam cup of lean. Premiered by The FADER, “Going Wild” showcases some of the off-kilter imagination that populates the new project.
Honing an effortlessly addictive and inventive flavor of trap music, Yung Bans’ sound is tailor-made for success. The Atlanta native burst into public consciousness in 2018, releasing three self-titled EPs, collaborating with the likes of Future, Juice WRLD, Lil Skies, among others, and earning positive mentions in Pitchfork, The FADER, HYPEBEAST, and more. The young rapper had streaming success with singles like “Ridin,” featuring Landon Cube and YBN Nahmir, and “Lonely,” featuring Lil Skies, which earned a combined 71 million streams on Spotify, and developed a fruitful relationship with Cole Bennett, who directed the video for “Ridin” (25 million views), among others. Bans kept busy in the first half of 2019 with a series of successful loose singles, including the Jetson Made/Pooh Beatz-produced “TIK TIK TIK,“ the YNW Melly-featuring “Gutta Bitch,” and “Side By Side” (produced by Nick Mira). With a monthly listener count that approaches 2 million, Bans is ready to take the next step with Misunderstood.
